I imagine that French electronics was superior to Russians in terms of avionics, especially now that Russia has struggling to equip themselves with Western components. But perhaps that will change in the future, especially with China's possible aid to Russia.

Mirage 4000 was the size and weight of a F-15 : and as a result, waaaaay too expensive. Lesson duly learned: Rafale shrunk to F-18 size, and wiped out any other fast jet in French service, Aéronavale included. And it worked.

War Iraq ever interested in the Rafale? I know the mirage 2000 and 4000 but was there ever anything on the Rafale. I know they sent the Rafale A to Saudi Arabia in the 80s to promote interest.

The first time it was mentioned was by the Iraqi Minister of Defense in January 2021.

I believe that what Archibald means is that it is the return of Iraqi customers for French combat aircraft, after several decades (if the contract is confirmed).

Concerning these 240 million dollars, it is possible that it is a translation and/or a typographical error or a unit cost (for 14 planes), to the extent that the La Tribune article does not cite this sum and where the very first time that it was mentioned, it was not for a deposit.

Looks like hearsay season is in full bloom; there's been a report that France will offer during the upcoming G20 summit a package for Brazil consisting of 24 used Rafales, 50 H145M, an additional Scorpene sub to the 4 ones entering service in the Brazilian Navy and 36 CAESAR howitzers. Some people seem to be including technical assistance for enginnering of the nuclear powerplant of the future Brazilian SSN, but that seems to be wishful thinking(it is a carrot the French have been dangling in front of Brazil post-AUKUS, though).

Some thoughts:

- Rafales are great aircraft, and would definitely welcome(not to mention that they would be in operation somewhat quickly), but one of the advantages Gripen had over it was lifetime cost, IIRC. While there have been a few indications the Brazilian government will flood the economy with printed money(it would solve a lot of problems for the government in the short-term), that isn't a sure thing yet(and there isn't any indication of how much of that money would end in the Defence budget), so it might be a bit risky;

- 50 H145Ms for the three Armed Forces would be quite welcome;

- So would be an additional Scorpene(in fact, I think that there should be more - but money to maintain them is the problem as always);

- The howitzers... eh, if they come, it's better than not having them, but I'd rather have Zuzanas(2nd place in the competition, CAESAR was 3rd place).

On November 2, I did a search and the original document was the web page of the Brazilian journalist Claudio Dantas in a publication of October 30, but there was no question of a second-hand Rafale.

And, in the link you provide, the article from October 31, which repeats the article from the Dantas webpage from October 30, does not indicate that it is a question of second-hand Rafale.
 
The oldest Rafales are
-the Aéronavale Rafale M (2001)
-the early Rafale F2 (2004). This is where the second-hand airframe were taken for Greece and Croatia (from memory - the countries).
