Shinshin is an experimental demonstrator rather than a prototype. Similar to EAP and Typhoon.

This sounds pretty much to me like corporate jibberish, or maybe that politically correct nonsense whereby a person using a broom to sweep the floor should now be called a "surface technician" (no kidding, that's what we ought to call them now in French!).

If an aircraft is built to demonstrate or validate concepts developed previously on paper or computer, it is a prototype, by any other name. The only difference is that computers more or less eliminate the need for trial and error, so that the prototypes are optimized from their first flight. But prototypes (literally "first of their kind") they truly are... especially since the final production product is usually a lot different from them!

I disagree.

To me the ATD-X is a demonstrator in a similar class to the X-29 or X-31 and not intended to lead to actual production platforms whereas a prototype is something like the X-32/X-35 or better yet YF-22/YF-23 and is definitely intended to lead to production platforms.

I suppose the question at hand is whether or not anyone expects the ATD-X to go beyond one (or maybe two) airframe(s).

;)

I can't wait to see what the final Mitsubishi F-3 will look like the Shishin can change in 20 years.

I take it there haven't been any publicly available images of 26 mdu yet, have there?

Some clear three-views of 25DMU and a new configuration (presumably 26DMU) observed at a JSDF expo held earlier this month.

Looks more and more like the Raptor with each yearly iteration. ;D

Thanks for the images. It's almost come full circle. The original design was similar to the F-22 in layout and this latest version seems to be even more so like the F-22 as you've pointed out.

check out the dimensions of japanese bvr aam. then take into account here shown 6+2 missiles in bays. as well as planned domestic engines. id ssay internal subsystem layout may be full of artistic licence.

Thanks Blackkite....so hopefully we'll see her aloft in the next few weeks. Did they mention when in February?

I will inform you immediately when I get the date of maiden flight.

now that's one sexy, cute flying machine. It is beautiful and, with some luck, Marcel Dassault sentence will apply to it "since it is beautiful, it will fly well" ;)

Oooooh taxi testing!

What a nice birthday present, thank you X-2 team ;D

I'm really looking forward to its first flight.

Quite a starter-level model and Shinshin is X-2, not F-3.

Reportedly maiden flight has been postponed to early March ... but here's the latest high-speed taxi test:

Still no information for the first flight. :'(

A bunch things I didn't see in the tread so far.

A very nice design evolution article
http://aviationclub.aero/article/view/7415/
Having produced 24DMU, TRDI assessed the impact of these changes in a simulated engagement. It found that a pilot flying a 24DMU instead of a 23DMU would be able to fire about 13% more missiles and the enemy about a third fewer

A cool artist impression of the 24DMU version
http://fighterman35.deviantart.com/art/24DMU-420341905

And a few more images bellow

Needless to say, I am rooting for the 24DMU to come back around ;)
