Its experimental demonstrator, not something for serial production. Think about it as a Japanese Have Blue. It was also too small for any operational use, but this was not the goal.

That makes sense. I figured it was a semi-prototype more than a technology demonstrator (like the F-22 'prototype').

The trailing edges might suggest radar ship nature from dead ahead is not a high concern

Some progress !

http://www.janes.com/article/36713/japan-s-indigenous-stealth-jet-prototype-to-fly-this-year

Not sure if this has been posted here or not.

Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera has reaffirmed the nation's plan for a 2014 first flight of the Advanced Technology Demonstrator-X (ATD-X) fighter: a prototype for a future fighter to replace the Japan Air Self-Defence Force's Mitsubishi F-2.

"In February I myself visited at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' (MHI's) Komaki Minami plant where the ATD-X is being built," Onodera told the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of the Upper House on 10 April. "There I was briefed that the first flight will take place this year."

The ATD-X, also known as Shinshin ('Heart of God'), is being developed by the ministry's Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI), with the main contractor of the project being MHI. It has been designed to be a stealthy air-superiority fighter with enhanced manoeuvrability. The Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) will use it to research advanced technologies and system integration, after which it plans to produce a 'sixth-generation' fighter encompassing i3 (informed, intelligent and instantaneous) concepts and counter-stealth capabilities.

"Originally MHI planned to roll-out the ATD-X before the media in May, soon after Japan's Golden Week holidays, followed by the first test fight," an official at TRDI told IHS Jane's on 15 April. "Now it is several months behind schedule."

Onodera also said in the Diet that the MoD will decide by FY18 whether to build its future stealth fighter domestically or by international joint development, based on parameters such as technological achievements and cost effectiveness.

Japan's plans to develop an 'F-3' from the ADT-X could run into opposition from the United States, however, which has blocked Tokyo's attempts to develop an indigenous fighter in the past.

The 1980s FSX support fighter programme was blocked by Washington, which pressured Tokyo over concerns that the growth of the Japanese aviation industry could damage that of the United States. The pressure eventually led to the co-development of the F-2: a platform based on the Lockheed Martin F-16C.

Officials said that with China and Russia deploying the Chengdu J-20 and Sukhoi PAK-FA T-50 fifth-generation aircraft respectively, Japan's development of a fast stealth fighter is becoming vital to national air defence.

"We know that our 28 radar sites are effective at detecting third- and fourth-generation fighters from a long distance, but with the appearance of fifth-generation fighters we are unsure how they will perform," Lieutenant General Hideyuki Yoshioka, then director of Air Systems Development at the TRDI, told IHS Jane's in November 2011.

The MoD allocated JPY2.7 billion (USD26.5 million) for research on radar and fire control systems able to detect, track and respond to stealth aircraft in FY14.

Could it be indeed true even if such blurred images more typical for the first unveiling of CHinese types, but this is said to be the ATD-X demonstrator ... ???

From this TV special?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_KQ76YFF4s&feature=player_detailpage#t=1367

Also, why would the nose gear be blurred? Top secret landing lights?

Here a news report and another screenshot, found at SNAFU!'s blog.
I also attached an own taken screenshot, showing a drawing of the rear part of this aircraft with the engines and its TVC system.

I presume, that the blurred pixels on fuselage over the engine intakes show the logo of the design and construction team.

This seems to be more of a demonstrator than a prototype, unless the actual thing is planned to be that small as well, which I don't see a point to given Japan's need.

They are censoring intake details and front landing gear, indeed. Also, EVERYTHING to date has said its a demonstrator, so not too surprising that its a... demonstrator.

I see. Thank you. Never really followed with this project, so I didn't know. Just read off from the topic's title, which said "prototype."

It looks like a scale demonstrator, e.g. X-plane...it's a long way from being a prototype.

Maybe the landing gear door is blurred to hide some panel shaping or faceting?

Another angle? Wind shield is from T-4?

YE, it is so far only a technical demonstrator for research purposes; nothing more, nothing less. Maybe comparable to the X-29, X-31 ...

If this project ever evolves into something larger to become a so called F-3 to replace the F-15J I don't know - to admit I'm highly sceptical since this one would require much, much more (most of all higher-thrust engines) - but so far it will be used to test tech nologies.
BY the way a comparison to the F-5E Tiger is interesting:

General characteristics: ATD-X - F-5E
Length: 14.174 m - 14.45 m
Wingspan: 9.099 m - 8.13 m
Height: 4.514 m - 4.08 m
Max. takeoff weight: 13 t - 11,214 t
Powerplant: 2 × IHI XF5-1 turbofans (+AB 49kN) - 2 × General Electric J85-GE-21B turbojet (+AB 22.2 kN)

The blurring of the intakes and the patches behind the canopy may be related - it seems the boundary layer removal system has changed slightly compared to the configuration seen on published photos of the Solange RCS model and various wind tunnel models. Previously the gap was exposed in the ventral direction (and hence the air was diverted that way) but now it has been faired over to give an enclosed duct - probably to improve signature from below - and I suspect the boundary layer air is instead bled over board via grilles behind the canopy.

As for the nose landing gear - beats me. Perhaps it's supposed to hide serrated edges? Makes no sense though, published photos of the Solange model show the serrated panel lines (including the nose landing gear door outlines) in great detail.

EDIT: Turns out even the current layout has been shown before:

http://dragoner-jp.blogspot.de/2012/11/2_14.html

No sign of a grille (or anything else interesting) behind the canopy on this model though. Note that the nose landing gear door is different to the one on the Solange model.

EDIT #2: From the video posted by fightingirish @ 1m02s (interior shot of the hangar before the doors are opened and it is rolled out):

Old fashioned air intake. I hope that Mitsubishi already prepared modification of this air intake shape.

Maybe the vertical tails will be gone soon, much like x-31 demonstrator?

Oh sharp opinion!
Aviation Week told "the Ministry of Defense of Japan intends to start the fighter-experimental development project to be called F-3".
It is expected that the performance of a new fighter becomes exceeding F-22 Raptor or F-35 Lightning II.
The fundamental portion of a project is due to be placed by development of stealth technology and a powerful power plant.
Moreover, development of a new fighter may be performed in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force.
Japan will start development work for F-3 fighter in 2016 or 2017, and to perform the test flight of the first plane from 2024 to 2025.

The cranked arrow wing f-16xl type variant has no tails while the fighter keeps them in the illustration?

Can somebody explain why they are going with 90ies tech paddles for thrust vectoring while the rest of the world is researching fluidic thrust vectoring?

Cos its a cheap demonstrator? It will show advantages (or not) of thrust vectoring without major expense...
