Seems to be something of a "proof of capability/concept" vehicle to me.sferrin said:Is it a prototype or an experimental vehicle?

A sign of S-shaped ducts? or something else?

I wish these stupid magazines/news agencies would stop calling it a prototype. It's not a prototype, it's a demonstrator.</rant off>

“With the F-35 programme we are not allowed access to the highest technologies that the US has,” says Doi. “Our experience can tell you that development programmes help our defence industry and can increase capabilities, knowledge, and skills.”

So their first time out of the gate is going to be "more advanced" than an aircraft that is the result of decades of prior real-world experience? Really?
Sundog said:Japan is buying the F-35. The F-35 is not the F-22. Japan wants the F-22. Japan cannot have the F-22. Japan is developing the F-3.
Is the F-3 more "advanced" than either of those other two airplanes? Who the hell knows, how are you defining "advanced", and it is optimized to their requirements for A2A that the neither the F-22 or F-35 meet; That last part is basic airplane configuration work, regardless of the technology employed.
