For France, the sale of Meteor air-to-air missiles to Turkey is still far from being certain

(...). On February 7, after having had a telephone exchange with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan affirmed that “the intensification of dialogue” between France and Turkey would “contribute positively to relations” between the two countries, which have “a potential for cooperation in many areas, particularly in the defense industry”. (...).
During an informal meeting of heads of state and government of European Union [EU] member states on February 3 in Brussels, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis (...) asked for details on the ongoing negotiations between Turkey and the European missile consortium MBDA, which are being carried out under the mediation of the United Kingdom, reported the Greek daily I Kathemirini on February 8. According to the latter, Mr. Macron “confirmed the discussions” before emphasizing “that no definitive agreement had been concluded with Turkey” and that an “agreement with Turkey should not be taken for granted”. (...).

NH-90 as a technological stepstone for 6th Gen GCAP?!?

My God, when did the Brits got so bad in commerce?

What's somewhat ironic is that Turkey's own ramjet BVRAAM with cropped fins that is intended for internal weapons bay carriage, dubbed Gökhan, is slated to go under airborne testing next year.

So this doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things other than a delay of a year or two at worst. We know that, in case of a Eurofighter purchase, Turkey plans to integrate indigenous weapons anyway so this isn't even that big of a leverage.

The only thing that might even make it a leverage is maybe being able to compare the test results of this new indigenous missile with Meteor's to get an idea of it's performance vis-à-vis enemy equipment; but as I said that doesn't even mean much in the long term.

For France, the sale of Meteor air-to-air missiles to Turkey is still far from being certain

Turkish Ministry of National Defense:

“The Meteor missile is a new generation long-range missile of European origin, among the air-to-air missiles. We plan to add Meteor missiles to our inventory within the scope of the Eurofighter Typhoon procurement project. As we have always said, our priority is domestic and national weapons and systems. In this context, we plan to strengthen our Air Force with the GÖKHAN air-to-air missile, which is an equivalent to the Meteor missile that we are developing. Until the GÖKHAN missile enters the inventory, the procurement work for the Meteor missile along with the Eurofighter aircraft continues without any problems.

Now FCAS can epicureanly rules the non-Lightned world...

My God, when did the Brits got so bad in commerce?

Errr.....you do know Leonardo are Italian?

Right?

And the UK has zero interest in NH-90.....in case you were unaware....

Do you honestly think Lorenzo Mariani is from Lancashire??

According to the Spanish newspaper
@larazon_es, 40 Typhoon jets, the first 20 of which will be second-hand from the UK and the other 20 of which will be newly produced, are expected to enter service with Meteor missiles between 2026 and 2030.

Those 20 would have to be Tranche 1, yes?

Those 20 would have to be Tranche 1, yes?
The newspaper's claim might be false though; on every occasion, the MoD has always said that they'd new planes.

What we can gather from all of this is, they're evaluating all options.

Second hand planes make sense due to urgent need of new airframes but why not wait a little longer and buy something that'll last longer and be more useful?

@timmymagic : I was clearly confused reading the latest report on Typhoon for Saudi AF.

Here is the exact quote:
Saudi Arabia can gain the industrial know-how it needs to participate in the GCAP fighter program by first setting up assembly lines for NH90 helicopters and Eurofighters, a senior Italian industrial official has said.

The Gulf kingdom needs to improve its aerospace skills before entering the sixth-generation jet program run by the U.K., Italy and Japan,

My bad.

But what a curious claim by Leonardo.

Certainly is a weird set of circumstances Tomcat ViP. Helicopters and Typhoons before GCAP? Saudi should just ignore Leonardo and concentrate on getting into GCAP.
Lately there have been reports of a heavy push by the Koreans to get them to sign a deal for KF-21 & a share in the future Korean 6th gen program.

Everyone's after that golden goose, you know...

From the French Minister of Defense:

“France is not concerned. […] We do not have control over British arms exports,” said the minister, before admitting that it was necessary to “measure the legitimate concern” of Greek public opinion generated by the potential sale of Meteor missiles to Turkey. Should we understand that Paris does not intend to block London's sales so as not to jeopardize its own?

“Do we have a role in this matter? The answer is no. The Meteor is grafted onto the Eurofighter. It is not us who are selling this platform to Turkey,” continued Mr. Lecornu. “And, on this matter, I think that we only have diplomacy and persuasion, in particular to find a path that allows everyone to talk to each other, to find a solution from above,” he added.

I'm expecting the publication of the Turkish procurement agreement during the next week. Besides this Greek annoyance, I think the German election was partial responsible for the drag in this matter.

Let's wait and see who gets the most votes in Germany had, I am sure that if it is the existing Government that wins the election the Turkey deal for the Typhoons will be signed as soon as possible.

I was thinking more in terms of - they already agreed not to oppose the UK deal but wanted the announcement after the election.

"Upon the official invitation of Commander of the Royal Air Force, General Sir Richard Knighton, Commander of the Turkish Air Force, General Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu and his delegation paid a visit to United Kingdom on February 18-20. As part of the activity, they visited the Headquarters of the Royal Air Force and RAF Coningsby Air Base."

Shame they missed an opportunity to display the meteor missile

Let’s not share any more news about Turkey before the signing ceremony happens, shall we?

For all forum members who like to build kites scale-models of aircraft well Airfix has a treat coming out soon:

Forming the backbone of the modern Royal Air Force, the Typhoon has been continually upgraded throughout its service life and is a far more capable aircraft today than the one which first arrived at RAF Coningsby back in 2006. Now a familiar sight in Britain's skies, the Eurofighter Typhoon is the RAF's current airspace defender and, whilst it entered service back in 2006 as a dedicated air superiority fighter, this fourth-generation combat aircraft has proven itself to be much more than this.
