funnily enough the weekly standard entry contains no reference to India and brings in Brazil at the end.

New Year hangover?

i had no idea the weekly standard kept up on stuff like that.

It seems that my early (and not very accurate) drawings of MiG izdelije 33 and fictitious Sukhoi PAK FA, based on the overscan's hand sketch will be living forever ::) Of course - a friend of mine noticed me about that, I had no idea about.

Hmmm ... sonds more like a "wish" than a fact ! ??? ... If he would be sure, why don't just say "tests will" begin in 2009.

Deino

you can also say that airframe [structural] tests will begin in 2009 (after delivery of first airframe to TsAGI a-la first SuperJet 100) - missing word structural, and no one can say then that you was kidding...

Flateric you know I respect your ideas but at all interviews Mr.Ivanov is talking about the first flight. But against the everything Im getting nervous about the first flight will be in 2009 or at Maks 2009.Because they are started to say we were planning to the first flight for 2010!And maybe after 5 or 6 months later they can say the first flight will be in 2010!It doesn't make me suprise, because at the first time I saw in an interview,2010 for the real first flight date!

Maiden flight of fifth-generation fighter this year: Russia

Moscow (PTI): Russia has said the maiden flight of the fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA), being developed by its Sukhoi design bureau in tie-up with Indian aerospace and defence major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), will be made by the end of the year.

"We expect the aircraft to take to the skies no later than the end of this year," Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

Earlier the maiden flight of the new air superiority stealth multi-role fighter featuring high manoeuvrability and precision in destroying land and sea targets was expected in 2010.

Ivanov, a close Putin ally and former Defence Minister, made this announcement in the South Volga region of Astrakhan, where he is on a visit to supervise the construction of facilities for the trials of the next generation fighter.

Under the bilateral agreement signed in October 2007, FGFA is being developed by Sukhoi, which is now part of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), along with India's HAL.

India and Russia will simultaneously develop a two-seater version of the war-bird to meet the requirements of India's air superiority doctrine, and a single-seater version for the Russian Air Force.

Prototype #01 (completed airframe) to commence structural/static testing @ Gromov, Zhukovsky imminently

Prototype #02 (final assembly) scheduled for first-flight by year-end ('09).

Maxim Pyadushkin writes: It looks like Russian government and military officials are in a hurry with the development of the country’s fifth-generation fighter, officially dubbed PAK-FA (Russian acronym: Future Aircraft System of Front-line Aviation). On January 22, vice-premier Sergey Ivanov announced that the new aircraft should start testing as soon as this year and enter service in 2015. “We are already close to finishing the first prototype from the pre-production series” he added.

Last December, Russian Air Force commander Gen-Col Alexander Zelin was more precise, saying he hopes to see the first flying PAK-FA prototype ready by Air Force Day on August 12. He was also sure that the new aircraft would begin test flight this year. Such announcements can be also explained by the MAKS air show that will take place near Moscow this August. MAKS is where the national state-controlled defense industry demonstrates its achievements to the country’s leaders, lobbing for budget subsidies and procurement orders. If PAK-FA does not roll out of Sukhoi’s hangars before the air show, it is likely to cause serious criticism from the government side.
Bill Sweetman adds: Good luck on the 2015 bit – but if the RusAF and Sukhoi adopt a strategy of building an “A” model using engines, avionics and weapons being tested for the Su-35, which seems likely, development could be faster and less costly that one might expect. And at least today's Russian leaders don't use Joe Stalin's performance-incentive plan...

Astrakhan, Jan 21 - RIA Novosti. The first flight was the fifth-generation combat aircraft by the end of 2009, said Vice-Premier Sergey Ivanov, who supervises the implementation of government weapons programs.

Its his job to paint a rosy picture, and put on the usually song and dance. I wouldn't take anything said by anyone close to the project, to seriously. They are after all trying to sell something

Do you think that will PAK-FA use the F-22 style more stealth engine nozzle at the latest AL-41F1? configuration.

Axisymmetrical nozzles on PAK FA - it's well known for a long.

Does anyone have pictures or artwork of the likely configuration?

Lots of places do. It's all fan art though.

India and Russia aim to fly joint fifth-generation fighter by 2017
By Siva Govindasamy

India and Russia hope to induct their joint fifth-generation stealth fighter by 2017, with officials from both countries hoping to iron out their differences in the coming months and sign a development contract by mid-2009.

"There have been differences between the two air forces, as both have specific requirements," says M Fakruddin, director for corporate planning and marketing at Hindustan Aeronautics. HAL will lead the Indian side of the programme. "These issues will be sorted out soon and by the middle of the year we expect to start work so that the aircraft is inducted by 2017."

The countries began talks in 2007 to develop a fifth-generation fighter based on the Sukhoi PAK-FA, which Russia hopes will have its first flight by the end of 2009 and is pegged as a challenger to the Lockheed Martin F-22 and Lockheed F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Last year HAL and Russian arms export agency Rosoboronexport agreed to study the joint development of a fighter. Since then, however, there have been differences over the aircraft's design and New Delhi's level of involvement in the project.

"Two major issues must be resolved. India was asked to invest a lot of money, but is unhappy with the level of access to sensitive technology that the Russians plan to give in return. In addition, the Indian air force is keen on a two-seat fighter, while Russia prefers to focus on a single-seater," says a New Delhi-based observer.

Flateric I'm observing that you are always right about the dates and development stages of the aircrafts:))And I have a question more, did Sukhoi company send the first aircraft for the strenght tests or when will they send and in your opinion when the first aircraft for the flight test can be ready for ground tests?:)

Just something to think about ... even if not 100% representative its a comparison / list made by "Scorpion" (via the FlugzeugForum) of time between first flight and service introduction - meaning earliest date of delivery (and not IOC) of several recent types:

http://www.flugzeugforum.de/forum/showthread.php?t=4550&page=5

JAS 39
first flight 1988
service introduction 1996
= 8 years

Rafale
first flight 1991
service introduction 2000
= 9 years

Eurofighter
first flight 1994
service introduction 2003
= 9 years

F-22
first flight 1997
service introduction 2003
= 6 years

For several types we have to add some additional time as they flew at first as a technology demonstrator :

Rafale A 1986 = 14 years
EAP 1986 = 17 years
YF-22 1990 = 13 years

And now - even with the severe circumstances in Russia between collapse of the SU, ...

Su-34
first flight 1990
service introduction 2006
= 16 years

...

So one may ask even if we agree on this year for the PAK-FA's first flight to 2015/17 for service entry and if the first PAK-FA prototype really represents a final serial standard (??!) are very, very demanding ... and I would say at least optimistic !

Even if we have to account the experiences and the knowledge gained thru the Su-47 or MiG MFI and keeping in mind how far they proceed with other sectors like powerplant, avionics, materials, weapons, FCS, ...

A hefty schedule I would say !

Deino

Deino, agreed. I suppose also that crisis will play its role as well, in spite of all the efforts and blah-blahs. We see how did it affect SuperJet100 program...and note - F-22 did fly in 1997, but it's prototype did it in 1990, so 13 years cycle for a direct PAK FA contender.

It's surely the most awaited aircraft on the world scene now.

But note as well - IL-2 Shturmovik - prototype -1939, first serial aircraft - 1941=)

What about can we add the timetable for the PAK-FA;Su 47 and Mig MFI?Do you think did PAK-FA development start in 2002 or did it start with the first flights of the Su 47 and the Mig MFI?Wont these projects speed up the development of the PAK-FA?

Do you think, will we see something about the PAK-FA at Indian airshow.I hope to see at least some brochures!!!Sukhoi officials started to talk about PAK-FA at British airshow and maybe they can show the first pictures at Indian airshow!!!This show is very important for Mig corporation and I think they need to show the world they are working on the PAK-FA's Indian version.Since 2007 we couldn't see anything without signed agreements and still there is planning one more agreement mid 2009!!!When will they start full developmentit's confusing. There passed two years but it seems that they still couldn't fully specify the Indian airfoce's needs at this aircraft)

It would be interesting to look at the original schedule for each type's delivery. In other words, how many delays of their own did they face? In 1990, did the U.S. Air Force really expect to wait another 13 years for the first F-22?

Is there nothing said (official or not) about any link between the Pakfa and the T54-4M-60 programs? would the russians beging from there (began...better said), will they choose that kind of romboidal wing (like the f18/23)?

Probably something like this?

Is there new information about the status of the program? And do you have any information about what is the latest situation at the Indian version Flateric? :)

already not...Major and Baveja wisely don't want to pay 5 billion for getting small bits of 5 gen tech.
Pogosyan wisely thinks that it's too cheap for sharing 5 gen tech
India wants two-seater, we want to sell RUAF single-seater and return R&D money.
Someone is cheating. Or both=)

What to talk about if they didn't sign an hard agreement in two years?

Thanks flateric:).Do you have any information, did they send the first prototype for the static tests to the Zhukosky?

think no, because when it will be so, we'll be reading about this three times a week

I found a news at military interfax but I have no subscription,Can you find the full news please:)

*Rostekhnologii, UAC to cooperate on fifth-generation jet fighter project*

MOSCOW. March 11 (Interfax-AVN) - The Rostekhnologii (Russian Technologies) state owned corporation and the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) will jointly pursue a program to develop a fifth-generation jet fighter.

"We will work together with the UAC in industrial programs, including the creation of a fifth-generation airplane, and in other projects. Rostekhnologii will take part in all of the UAC's programs," Rostekhnologii General Director Sergei Chemezov said at a ceremony in Moscow on Wednesday, during which the state corporation and the UAC signed a cooperation agreement.

Rostekhnologii's 80 enterprises that act as suppliers for plants belonging to the UAC will be merged into several instrument making holdings that will cater to the needs of the aircraft manufacturing sector, said Chemezov, who is also chairman of the Russian Machine Building Union.

Russia's fifth-generation jet fighter is being developed by the Sukhoi Holding. Its flight trials are expected to start in 2009. The new aircraft will be super-maneuverable and use stealth technology to make it harder to be detected by radars. It will fly at supersonic speeds and all weapons will be installed inside its fuselage.

I don't think this is close to the PAK-FA design. I expect a lot more Su-27 DNA in the mix. I'm willing to be surprised though.
