Merriman's Submarine Modelling Masterclass

So, which one of those boats has working torpedo tubes? There are skimmers to "blow up"!!! :D
Only the THRESHER model had practical launchers from which to shoot gas propelled torpedoes. That was so configured about twenty years ago. Last year I tore out the system and back fitted a much easier to maintain SubDriver. Though it could and did launch from four tubes, it was a major hassel to set-up and maintain. Here's the system before it was removed -- only the tube interface opening remain today.

Smart-Ass aerospace guy. That was very hurtful, you insensitive jerk! I have feelings too, you know. I'm shocked.... Shocked!

There I was, my first Cabin Fever Expo event -- one specifically featuring r/c model boats. I bring a small portion of my 1/96 fleet of museum quality crafted model submarines. Displayed on the tables and in and under the water. If there is an attentive God in heaven, I should have been the darling of the ball.

But... NO!

All eyes and cameras focus in on that god-awful r/c boat dressed out as a Hogie...

... FUCK!

1/72 scale? or larger?

Because U-1 is a TINY thing... ~240 tons surfaced, 139ft long, 12'4"beam, 10'5" draft...

Nice to see a WWI type here ;)
I could not agree with you more, sir. A fellow countryman of yours started this particular model building project and invited me in to work out the practical mechanics of the thing (imagine: a stoic German asking a wild-ass Scott for mechanical help -- the world upside-down!).

And I'm starting to develop a bit of a Passion concerning the early WW1 combatant submarines -- lots of neat stuff that history has skipped over after all this time.

Here's a link to the work Andreas and I are doing to breathe life into this little r/c model submarine: https://forum.rc-sub.com/forum/builder-threads/174677-s-m-u-1-a-new-rc-project

There is a disconnect between craftsmanship/skill/talent/quality and wit in the minds of most people. The same odd quirk that causes so many people to lose their minds over the dribblings of the latest mumbling rapper while ignoring actually good music.

Of course, that "nuclear sub" is funny for about a minute. Someone might buy it for a fair stack of cash, take it home, put it on a shelf, admire it for thirty seconds... then never give it another thought. A true masterpiece, on the other hand, will be admired repeatedly, often and for generations.

Brief, bright, and relevant. Just the salve I needed for this bruised ego of mine, Scott.

(Slowly unwinding from this awful, contorted fetal position I adopted since going up against that Italian 'sub').

To be honest, the "nuclear sub" thing is a decent gag. But that's all it is. And with rare - very rare - exceptions, individual gags don't last.

Me, I've little interest in RC, either airplanes or subs. But a well-built, accurate, detailed, masterfully painted and fitted out display piece? Hell yeah, brother. So a Typhoon or a Type XXI at the same size as the "nuclear sub" will always be much or of a thing to admire.

Or a 1/18 Project Pluto, but that's just me...

Hell. Kit-bash an X-10 and your halfway to your nuclear-powered terror-machine.

What's it with you and unshielded, particle spewing aerial vehicles? One's an open-ended nuclear air furnace, the other a two nuclear bomb per second city lifter!
