I am rather surprised they are attempting a full recovery on the first mission. I seems highly unlikely they would be successful right away.

That is *PRECISELY* why attempting it as soon as possible makes perfect sense. The more and sooner you learn, the better.

Well dropping into the sea and confirming it goes where you want it at a sufficiently slow speed seems like the safer move for the landing barge.
