This last week has been pretty hectic in terms of next generation concepts: Boeing unveiled the updated version of the F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter concept, Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works released a new UCLASS Concept video and, after some years of evaluation and study, Russia’s PAK-DA conceptual design was given the official approval.

In a meeting with Russian lawmakers, Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said that all the relevant document were signed allowing the industry to begin the development of systems for the plane.

With its flying wing shape and radar-evading capabilities, the subsonic PAK-DA is destined to replace Moscow’s aging fleet of 63 Tu-95 Bear and 13 Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers.

According to the RIA Novosti, Russian Air Force commander insisted that the aircraft will be equipped with advanced electronic warfare systems and armed with new nuclear-capable long-range cruise missiles, and will be able to carry a wide array of conventional precision guided weapons.

The new plane will enter production stage by 2020 with the first bomber in active service by 2025-2030 timeframe.

The PAK-DA will not be hypersonic (even if it will probably carry hypersonic missiles) as opposed to the American X-51, Falcon HTV-2 and other hypersonic development programs on which U.S.’s perspective strike capability will be based.

A “sixth-generation” pilotless strategic bomber based on the PAK-DA could came around 2040-2050.

"Russian Air Force Approves New Bomber Design--Commander"

MOSCOW, April 11 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Air Force has approved the conceptual design and specification of its future PAK-DA strategic bomber, paving the way for development of components for the aircraft, Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said Thursday.

“The development of the aircraft is going as planned. The outline of its design and characteristics has been approved and all relevant documents have been signed allowing the industry to start the development of systems for this plane,” Bondarev said at a meeting with Russian lawmakers.

The PAK-DA (meaning future long-range aircraft) project has been in the works for several years but was given the formal go-ahead by the Russian leadership last year. It is due to replace Russia’s aging fleet of 63 Tupolev Tu-95MS Bear and 13 Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers in the next decade.

According to recent reports in the Russian media, citing defense ministry sources, the Tupolev design bureau has won the PAK-DA development tender with its concept for a subsonic aircraft with a “flying wing” shape which provides superior “stealth capabilities.”

The Defense Ministry insisted that the PAK-DA should be equipped with advanced electronic warfare systems and armed with new nuclear-capable long-range cruise missiles in addition to a veriety of high-precision conventional weapons.

The new bomber is expected to go in production by 2020 and will be built at a new aircraft assembly line at Russia's Kazan plant (KAPO), according to defense ministry officials. The same plant previously built the Tu-95MS and Tu-160.

Given the configuration - the logical thing would be to have engine and fuselage commonality with the NGB (with RAM, avionics and defensive suites developed by the home countries of course).

Well, Î think so . Thanks !

so no, this is not PAK DA

first one is TsAGI DMS-LK (Long Haul Airliner - Flying Wing) model
second is DIMMI (militaryrussia.ru owner) placeholder PAK-DA fanart
both have nothing to do with PAK DA
sorry, you will have to wait at least 7 years...

If they're going to keep it under wraps like PAK-FA then yes it's a bummer ( for the aviation enthusiast). However there was some artwork leaked in 2007 for PAK-FA , so perhaps something similar will be leaked for PAK-DA in a few years?

Anything more that is not classified that you can share about this project, open source info points it's allegedly a B-2 like flying wing, so 4 engines maybe, perhaps a bit bigger than B-2 (guessing), allegedly sporting AAMs for self-defense, anything else special about it ? Thanks.

(Me i also bet the thing will have DIRCM turrets all around and possibly even DEW)

;D

Well, please don't get yourself kidnapped by some CIA bastards then...

Anyway, well if the little available from open sources is to be put together, we have a VLO B-2 like aircraft, armed with long range hypersonic missiles, and AAMs for self defence, which are pretty unique characteristics. (and like i said , i also suspect comprehensive DIRCM and ECM, and possibly laser and/or microwave "offensive" capabilities- and even if not at first, then definitely down the line about 2030ish)

Just hope the yanks won't make their NGB supersonic/ trisonic / hypersonic and all the info so far about it is a bluff.

Everyone relax, i have located PAK DA. As i am not bright yellow i am obviously safe from persecution.

I think the first plane is a distraction for the Tu-22 hiding behind it... misinformation... :D

Russia to Ramp Up New Bomber Development

Dec. 2, 2013 Russia plans next year to ramp up research and development for a next-generation strategic bomber, RIA Novosti quoted a prominent industry insider as saying last week. "A decision was made this year to expedite the development of the PAK-DA [bomber]," Mikhail Pogosyan, leader of the firm United Aircraft, said on Thursday at an air force conference overseen by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Pogosyan added: "We finished coordinating the project with the Defense Ministry in September and at present we are getting ready to start full-scale work on research and development of these aircraft next year. The Defense Ministry wants the planned aircraft to hold nuclear-ready, long-range cruise missiles and a number of highly accurate non-nuclear arms, according to RIA Novosti. The planned aircraft would eventually supplant Russia's Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers, some of which are now undergoing refurbishment. Pogosyan said that initial vetting of the updated planes is finished and they are now slated for review by the government. Meanwhile, updates to Russia's other nuclear forces are reportedly under way. Putin on Wednesday said his country would place 22 new ICBMs on active duty in 2014, and a defense insider identified the weapons as fixed and moveable Yars ballistic missiles, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia is also wrapping up preparation of two new Borei-class ballistic missile submarines -- the Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh -- but Moscow has delayed delivery of those vessels to the navy until next year, RIA Novosti reported on Saturday

Tupolev have completed the design of Russia's PAK-DA next-generation bomber aircraft, according to the head of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Mikhail Pogosyan.

Pogosyan made the remarks during a briefing with the Russian aerospace press, according to individuals familiar with the presentation who briefed IHS Jane's on the details. He is understood to have confirmed that the "on-paper" design of the PAK-DA has now been completed by the Tupolev design bureau.

The PAK-DA project will now transition into an intermediate phase between the completion of the aircraft's design and prototype construction, with the beginning of fabrication of some of the component modules for the aircraft.

Despite speculation about whether the PAK-DA will be of a flying-wing design, Pogosyan declined to discuss details of the aircraft's configuration. UAC, which holds the contract for the PAK-DA programme, has overall responsibility for the design of the new bomber. However, the programme is being developed by UAC's new subsidiary formed by the merger of the Tupolev design bureau and the KAPO production plant in Kazan.

Meanwhile, the Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA fifth-generation fighter continues to add more flight test aircraft to the programme, with five prototypes now undergoing validation flights. One more prototype will be delivered for the flight test schedule in 2014 and then two more in 2015. In 2016 the programme is scheduled to begin a low rate of deliveries to operational units, but this is still open to change due to a lack of any concrete facilities within the Russian Air Force (VVS) for the testing of some of the aircraft's performance parameters.

Because of the phased introduction into service and the number of improvements being planned beyond the original configuration the T-50 is probably headed for a very long service life. Projections are, said Pogosyan, that it would be in service well after 2050.

Pogosyan is also understood to have confirmed that the slow pace of the introduction of the T-50 PAK-FA fighter means that the Sukhoi Su-35S 'Flanker-E' will be the backbone of the VVS for the foreseeable future. Pogosyan envisages that as a result, the Su-35S, and later derivatives, will remain in production for at least another decade for the VVS. Of the 48 Su-35S aircraft on order, 12 have been delivered so far, with a further 12 planned in 2014 and 14 in 2015. As a result, several additional Su-35S batches are expected to be procured to replace Su-27 and Su-30 models that are being retired, as PAK-FA aircraft will not be able to replace these older models on a one-for-one basis.

He also reiterated a previous position that there was no immediate Russian requirement for a lightweight fighter to replace the MiG-29 'Fulcrum'. For now the Mikoyan design team will focus on advanced derivatives of the MiG-35, but that a single-engine fighter requirement potentially exists "somewhere in the future".

The other future, but undecided, requirement is for a new attack aircraft programme. These options run the gambit from an advanced Su-25 to an attack variant of the Yakovlev Yak-130, or even a "clean-sheet" design for a new attack aircraft, Pogosyan stated. Whatever ends up being developed, however, will be a programme that only moves into full-scale development after the PAK-DA project is in production.

New Russian Bomber Coming Soon, but Not So Soon

Russia plans to begin construction of its prototype PAK-DA fifth-generation bomber this year, but the targeted delivery date for the Russian air force's first copy has already slipped three years to 2023, reported the state-run RIA Novosti. "The maiden flight should be performed in 2019. State tests and supplies will be completed in 2023," said Russian air force chief Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev in the May 22 report. PAK-DA is being designed to penetrate and suppress modern integrated air defenses systems through some combination of stealth and a sophisticated electronic attack suite. Russian bombers have increasingly probed US and NATO airspace in recent years and sharply increased long-range flights around allied and national airspace in the Pacific, officials noted earlier this year. The Russian frontline strategic nuclear bomber force is currently comprised of 13 supersonic Tu-160 and 63 legacy Tu-95 long-range cruise missile carriers, according to the press.

I still wonder if news author at AFA have read original news at http://en.ria.ru/military_news/20140522/190033951/Russians-Air-Force-to-Receive-New-Generation-Long-Range-Bomber.html
and where he took this BS about construction start this year.

They are also dedicating an entire cyber-team to making sure that such "scoop" doesn't leak out in the future.

Hi!
PAK DA engine. After burning supersonic engine?
http://blog.livedoor.jp/corez18c24-mili777/archives/41228800.html

"Kuznetsov of a Russian aerospace manufacturer major company (Kuznetsov) unveiled a picture of the jet engine it's expected to load into the next generation stealth bomber to which development is being advanced at present for Russian Air Force on the 7th "PAK DA". Kuznetsov is also learned about as developing agency of a rocket engine of NK-33 and a jet engine of NK-32 to be equipped with by Tu-160.

The observation such as something's near a to be equipped with Pratt & Whitney F135 engine being loaded into F-35 spread over PAK DA on the west side at first, a picture of the engine Kuznetsov exhibited this time, than F135, it's something remarkably larger and has also gained a possibility that PAK DA isn't the one of medium and small size considered at first by this. Development is advanced to PAK DA for completion in around 2019 for the moment."

Btw, it was mentioned week ago or two that they will show PAK-DA in 2018.
