Looks like the Soviet textbook simply stole these and painted over the US insignia.

They didn't do that. They simply took some US pics "as is". The circle areas you think are patches covering up the US markings are actually the lift-fans!
These are drawings we've had on this forum, perhaps even several times. And I remember a discussion as to whether the bottom one was Ryan or NAA. To me it is definitely a Ryan/G.E. thing.

No. General Electric was not a proponent of airframes. They associated with Ryan on every Vertifan project, and this is one of them.

Read the article!! It says they "developed a system" for a "lift-fan". They did not originate the aircraft design!!!

In that case you maybe should have cut the image in two, or explained what the other design is, because it's ambiguous.
The Ryan project is on the left (the other one is Bell). As clearly shown, it's not so much a Ryan design as the projected application of their Vertifan technology to the Fokker F28.
They studied the exact same modifications on other aircraft such as the Gulfstream and the Learjet.

According to XV-5 vertifan drive gas supply system drawing, each main jet engine seems to supply all three vertifans to prepare for one engine trouble. Also XV-5 has a vertical direction reaction trim control system at the tail of the aircraft.

Trust amplification is about 2.5!!

Recently posted by the San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM) at their YouTube site, footage of the 5 October 1966 crash landing of the XV-5A (62-4506) which resulted in the tragic death of Bob Tittle. Footage from several different angles is provided, including (beginning at the 7 min 35 sec mark) an on-board camera on the underside of the aircraft which shows what appears be the rescue sling which was ingested into the aircraft's port-side wing liftfan inlet (shown at the 3 min 57 sec mark and 6 min 13 sec mark) resulting the crash. Sadly, Tittle suffered his fatal injuries from his seat ejecting sideways and tumbling due to the torque placed on the aircraft as it touched down.

It was under the heading "Flight Propulsion News"in Aviation Week, July the 3rd, 1961, so with a high probability
it's not an aircraft project, but just a proposed application for a the lift engines developed by General Electric, as
the text implies.
And ... it's definitely not a liftfan design !
