They didn't do that. They simply took some US pics "as is". The circle areas you think are patches covering up the US markings are actually the lift-fans!
These are drawings we've had on this forum, perhaps even several times. And I remember a discussion as to whether the bottom one was Ryan or NAA. To me it is definitely a Ryan/G.E. thing.

No. General Electric was not a proponent of airframes. They associated with Ryan on every Vertifan project, and this is one of them.
Read the article!! It says they "developed a system" for a "lift-fan". They did not originate the aircraft design!!!
