Overscan you asked for XF-103 pics so here you go! Don't get too excited as they are from a mock up model, however there is real footage of the tail fin being hauled outside the hangar by workers for a photo op. Hopefully I'll find more films on the XF-103. Mostly I have on the reel these pictures came from - technical stuff - about 900 ft of it.

Excellent pics. Again, thanks for sharing!

Ironic that the F-104 was dubbed the "missile with wings", as this description was even more suitable for the unbuilt F-103...

I'm with the understanding that the F-104 was dubbed 'the missile with a man it it.' If the F-103 had gone to production I'm sure someone would have coined a similar phrase.

Moreover, no one has produced an illustration of the number one and number two XB-70A aircraft flying in formation. That would be cool!
 
Yeah...I was gonna do an F-108 too anyway. All I need is reference of the type, reference to the squadron markings, and the rest I could extrapolate from existing aircraft of the period.

Despite the fact this is the F-103, not F-108 thread, I'd like to add that to me the real treat would be to have an F-108 and an XB-70 flying together, since that's the way it was meant to be at the start!

As for the F-103... The more pics the better.
 
Well I'm down to make both the XF-103 and XF-108 as they are already on my list. That said...I could use some 103 stuff if anybody (ahem Justo) has anything. The stuff on this thread is a bit lacking in the 3 view department. I did some digging on the web on my own and found little else. I used to have a magazine with some good stuff in it years ago. Sadly...I tossed it out with numerous other magazines years ago.

I am pretty convinced that film is showing the same 'periscope' system as installed on the XF-103, being flight tested on an F-84. Or is this something unrelated? Anyone knows?

Yep - there's a photo of this aircraft in Jenkins & Landis' Valkyrie: North American's Mach 3 Superbomber, Speciality Press, P48.

Attached - some pics from the Ebay auction plus a section on the periscope and its testing on the F-84H from the excellent article by Richard A DeMeiss in Air Enthusiast Seven.

There's quite a few 16mm-to-DVD services around, so that shouldn't be a problem hopefully.
I expect that the auction images give a pretty good idea what to expect, but it's probably pretty detailed stuff as it should be over 16 minutes of film in total.

Real shame I was too cheap on that F-84-with-persicope footage. I won't get a second chance for such a reel I don't think and it would have matched the XF-103 footage nicely! :-\
