Now we've got "SUV-sized" drones over the eastern US

The following is NOT a real Top Secret conversation.

So, what do we tell the people in New Jersey?

We tell them nothing.

But doesn't the public have a right to know?

No.

Why not?

Look, you're new here. These are top secret aircraft that you're not cleared to know about. The Chinese and Russians can't know anything either, got it?

OK, OK, I get it.

Besides, if we release anything, and I mean the tiniest detail, those guys on that UK site are going to blab about it.

Oh. Right. Can't have that.

Look, we're just going to stall everybody. Form a committee. You know, the usual. The media will stop talking about it.

What if they don't stop?

We'll hit them with a stop order. You know, national security and all that.

Good idea.
During the eighties I was having dinner in a luxury restaurant with a client for a tax issue (he paid the ), in the booth next to ours three guys quite well known in the media were discussing, they were quite drunk and one of them boasted of his ability to influence the elections, his opponent challenged him by assuring that if he set his mind to it he could make all young people of his age son put a ring on their nose like the oxen of their native village. Everyone laughed and so did I, now I don't laugh anymore.

Quite true. I once observed a near-perfect "flying saucer" when I rode a car near Vnukovo airport. It was, of course, merely a jet liner taking off from behind the trees, but the illusion was perfect; the wings and hull were visible from behind at such angle, that they created an impression of flying disk with central bulge. And the motion of the car (which moved almost at right angle to the airstrip) created the illusion that "saucer" is gliding sideway over treetops.

These Martians are so stupid that while they spy on us they forget to turn off the navigation lights

Your choices are:

Military aircraft made on Earth.

Aircraft from other planets..

That's it.

- Commercial drones
- Hobbyist drones, with modified firmware and/or batteries
- DIY drone
- Etc.

Since this story has been reported in the media there have been many, many misidentifications of conventional aircraft reported as "drones". There are still plenty of reports of aircraft with a distinct lighting pattern that hover for extended periods (1 or more hours), frequently fly in formation or coordinated with each other, and accelerate and fly like a quadcopter.

Any idea how much they have been spending on the replicator initiative?

The first iteration of Replicator (Replicator 1), announced in August 2023, will deliver all-domain attributable autonomous systems (ADA2) to warfighters at a scale of multiple thousands, across multiple warfighting domains, within 18-24 months, or by August 2025.

I have to disagree. It is rational in that they are talking logic rather than playing into the conspiracy theories and hysteria.

Saying they have no information, but it's definitely not X or Y is not logical.

Official government spokesmen cannot identify the drones. They are also saying they are not a threat to national security. They are the ones withholding information. No need to bring in fake terms like conspiracy theory. IF they are something normal, natural and identifiable then identify them.

And not a peep from the FAA.

I will take "really interesting coincidences" for for $50 Alex.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III toured Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to participate in a counter unmanned systems capabilities demonstration and engage with commercial industry leaders during a visit to Silicon Valley on Dec. 6, 2024 ahead of the Reagan National Defense Forum.

DIU is head of the Replicator initiatives and counter drone programs.

Let me lengthen the list a bit:

-Military aircraft with their position lights on.

-Civilian aircraft with their position lights on.

-Drones piloted by teenagers with the intention of having fun.

-The same with idiot adults.

-The same with idiot aliens.

-The same with psychologists who study the hysterical reactions of taxpayers.

-The same for creating psychological maps of the population for use by AI.

-The same to avoid talking about the new administration in the news.

My newest theory is that it is the Martians taking revenge on New Jersey for their defeat 31 October 1938. Or maybe some Evil Red Lectroids from Planet Ten. Time to drive over to Grover's Mill to investigate!

John Kirby says the mystery drone sightings are all “lawful, legal, commercial, hobbyist, & even law enforcement aircraft activity. Some of it manned, some of it unmanned”

Gee, I didn't even know one could become an admiral through a career in public affairs.

He probably should have talked to a prosecutor before talking to the press. Even according to DoD these aircraft have not been acting in a manner that is "lawful, legal".

A few of the statues that have been violated:

18 USC 795 Photographing and Sketching of Defense Installations
18 USC 796 Use of an Aircraft for Photographing Defense Installations

49 USC 44809 Exception for limited recreational operations of unmanned aircraft
49 USC 46306 Failure to register an aircraft not providing transportation
49 USC 46307 Violation In National Defense Airspace

NJ SB 3370 Regulation and prohibition of certain types of drones

Various local NJ township and county ordinances

Having closely examined the technical data and tips from concerned citizens, we assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones. We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast.

Here we are again. Back in the 1950s with bad non-explanations of UFO sightings. J. Allen Hynek would be proud.

The American people aren't stupid. (Not counting the Media.)

The following did NOT happen.

Hi. We are illegals. We are flying drones over New Jersey. Don't tell anyone.

Courtesy of some Libertarians...

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a UFO! It's an Iranian mothership! It's a radiation probe! Or maybe it's really just a plane. The wave of alleged noctural drone sightings in New Jersey has led to some wild theories about what the mysterious lights in the sky could be.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R–N.J.) claimed that the drones were coming from an Iranian "mothership" in the Atlantic Ocean, then retracted his claim after the Pentagon denied it. (The Iranian navy does have a sort of aircraft carrier for drones—and publicly-available satellite imagery shows that it's still sitting in the Persian Gulf.) The mayor of Belleville, New Jersey, claimed the drones were part of a secret search operation for missing radioactive material, although the materials have already been recovered. Rep. Nancy Mace (R–S.C.) even asked whether it could be aliens from outer space.

But there might be a simpler explanation. Gov. Phil Murphy has suggested that at least some of the sightings were just normal air traffic misidentified by over-eager drone spotters. Police documents obtained by Reason under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act back up that theory. A map of drone reports produced by the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office shows a dense concentration of sightings along the flight path of airliners leaving New York City.

The brightest spots on the map are around Monmouth Battlefield State Park and Keansburg Beach, which sit on a straight line extending northwards to New York's LaGuardia Airport. Monmouth Battlefield State Park is also next to Old Bridge Airport, a small airfield that houses a flight school. The aviation tracking app Flightradar24 shows that manned civilian aircraft regularly fly over the state park and beach, especially on flights from New York to southern cities, such as Atlanta and Miami.

At least some of the drone sightings have been proven to be normal planes. Sen. Andy Kim (D–N.J.) rode along with police on drone patrol in Hunterdon County in early December, then used Flightradar24 to show that "what was pointed out to me the other night as a possible drone flying near us" was just a small airplane. NewsNation aired footage on December 13 of "drones" in Ocean County that "looked like fixed wing aircraft." The flying objects were, in fact, fixed-wing aircraft.

I am not impressed with the FAA restrictions.

I got a list of the NJ locations with the restrictions from this article:

Here's the list:
  • Hamilton.
  • Bridgewater.
  • Cedar Grove.
  • North Brunswick.
  • Metuchen.
  • Evesham.
  • Camden.
  • Gloucester City.
  • Westampton.
  • South Brunswick.
  • Edison.
  • Branchburg.
  • Sewaren.
  • Jersey City.
  • Harrison.
  • Elizabeth.
  • Bayonne.
  • Winslow.
  • Burlington.
  • Clifton.
  • Hancocks Bridge.
  • Kearny.
Notably absent:

Colt's Neck (home of NWS Earle, where overflights were reported by the Navy)
Rockaway Township/Jefferson Township (home of Picatinny Arsenal, where overflights were reported by the Army)
Highlands (closest town to the Coast Guard station on Sandy Hook)
Seaside Park (close to Island Beach State Park, where the Ocean County Sheriff reported drones)
Bedminster (home of a Well Known Person's golf course, also site of some drone reports)

I'll bet others can think of more.

Commentary from a Skeptical writer which broadly parallels the remarks by the Libertarians I posted earlier.

The drones are back!

A recent rash of mysterious lights in the sky have been seen for the past month or so, first in northern New Jersey, then Philadelphia, and on to parts of New York City and elsewhere. It’s all the viral news rage, spawning social media posts, conspiracy theories, irritation, and mystery-mongering.

It’s easy to forget in an era of attenuating attention spans and a continual churn of news, but these drone scares are nothing new. Almost exactly five years ago, as 2019 came to a close, news reports spread about nearly two dozen “mysterious” drones sighted in the night skies over rural Colorado and Nebraska. Despite the (presumed) drones apparently operating legally under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations (and not, for example, at a high altitude or near a Colorado airport or government buildings) authorities launched investigations. Concerned—and/or annoyed—residents asked if it was legal to shoot the drones down and were told it was not a good idea; it is considered an aircraft and someone else’s property. Still, people were understandably unnerved.
