Hello All,

I want to make an important clarification that I have never seen published.

Someone early in this thread comments that during the B-70 / F-104 mid-air, Carl Cross didn't do anything to save himself. According to Al White, Carl Cross appeared to be knocked unconscious during the snap roll. Al was trying to reach for Carl's Eject system most of the way down, but could not get to it. Al's capsule actually closed on his Al's arm, and he was able to pull his arm in just as the capsule ejected.

Hopefully Carl impacted while he was still unconscious.

Looks like the art department's rendering of a sketch made by a reporter who was given a quick glimpse of a real picture over a three-martini lunch.

Whoops. Wrong way up.

ISTR that at least one aviation mag, publishing its first planview drawing of Tier 3- (DarkStar), helpfully added an "airplane goes this way" arrow, pointing in the wrong direction.

Much as Mrs CJ was impressed by the Valkyrie in Dayton the other week, I doubt she'd be up for having this in the middle of the sitting room.

Wonder what happened to the third XB-70? Scrapped? If so when was it scrapped.

Not sure how much was actually assembled. Apparently, some parts were cannibalized for AV1 and AV2.
 
Just wanted to let you know that I was the E Bay winner of the recently posted pictures of the 22 inch B-70.

In over 50 years of collecting I was tickled pink to add it to the collection. There were some issues with the paint, decals, and wingtips being broken, but with a little bondo, super glue, paint, and fresh decals she is as good as new.

Yeah, I know........ but this was one of those times when I could not match the paint and keep it as original as I would prefer. Age and smoke had it in about 1000 shades of white and yellow and try as I might it was impossible, to say the least. The windows were awful, and the remaining decals cracked and yellowed so it was a logical choice.

Here she is on the shelf all fresh and pretty.

The base is original as I had an in-house F-107 that was on the identical style that was not the norm for the NAA shop. Interesting that there were some small differences in the final configuration as flown. I REALLY wonder where it was in the design series. You will note that the intakes were not painted nor recessed and the exhaust cones were all hand turned aluminum that fit into recesses quite nicely.

All in all quite lucky and pleased to have it.

XB-70A Prototype of B-70. Two were built.
  • AV-1, NAA Model Number NA-278, USAF S/N 62-0001, completed 83 flights spanning 160 hours and 16 minutes.[96][97]
  • AV-2, NAA Model Number NA-278, USAF S/N 62-0207, flew 46 times over 92 hours and 22 minutes, before it crashed in June 1966.[98]
XB-70B AV-3, NAA Model Number NA-274, USAF S/N 62-0208, was originally to be the first YB-70A in March 1961. This advanced prototype was canceled during early manufacture.[ YB-70 Planned preproduction version with improvements based on XB-70s] B-70A Planned bomber production version of Valkyrie.] A fleet of up to 65 operational bombers was planned. RS-70 Proposed reconnaissance-strike version with a crew of four and in-flight refueling capability. xb-70 made.png

I am trying to get my head around the dimensions of the bomb bays on the proposed production version of the B-70. I know what weapons load it was specified to carry as we discussed it here. Peter E. Davies states in his Valkyrie book that the weapons bay was in two 14ft sections (including 1ft of unusable space between them- so effectively 13.5ft each) with a total volume of 1,200cu ft. For comparison:

B-52: 1,003ft, total length 27ft, sometimes divided in two by a moveable bulkhead
B-1A: 3 x 14ft bays with a total volume of 1,643cu ft

The near exact two-thirds of a B-1 bomb bay configuration and the similarly sized individual bomb bays suggests that the B-70 and B-1 may have had similar design drivers (e.g. specific bomb types) for bomb bay length and volume. Does anybody know if this was the case? what was the original bomb load specification for the AMSA program?

What were the width and depth measurements for the B-70 bomb bays?
