P.S. And no, they wouldn't be a "ecological danger". Dire wolf is not suited for survival in modern ecosystem. It trived in the age of megafauna; basically, dire wolf specialized on hunting big, slow animals. It got powerful jaws and additional mass, but slower and clumsier than modern wolves. It would not survive in the wild.

My understanding - very limited as it is - is that it's currently unclear just how "dire" these wolves are. Seem to be modern wolves with some modest tinkering, still far from a *true* dire wolf.

The differences between humans and chimps are enormous on an intellectual level, our adaptability, creativity and ability to modify the environment to survive is far superior. You can send a chimp to college by bribing as many officials as necessary, but he will never become an engineer, you can launch him into space, but he will never be an Alan Shepard... These guys are basically environmentalists.
