A study in Massachusetts shows a breakthrough infection rate of one in one thousand people usually with them being asymptomatic or having a cold. Studies are ongoing to see if such people can still spread the virus. One thing we are not told is which variant of the virus was causing the breakthroughs. I don’t think I’ve seen anything definitive on whether the Delta variant causes a higher level of breakthrough infections than the Alpha variant for example.

Clearly the "delta" is by far the worse in the lot - a massive contagious spreader even among vaccinated people. Delta is the Indian one; the happy combination of a 1.4 billion people population with massive inequalities among them (slums included) - and Modi on top of that. Yeeeah... that can only end well. Merde.

There’s concern over the emergence of the Delta Plus variant in the U.K. and India, it appears to do everything the Delta variant does but more so.

Scientists have warned that Delta plus has three worrying characteristics; increased transmissibility, stronger binding in receptors of lung cells and potential reduction in monoclonal antibody response.

Not all vaccines are created equal and though the AZ vaccine gets badmouthed it’s still a highly effective one. TBH I think you really need the vaccine equivalent of modern tank armour, and skimping on buying the best is going to see you going the same way as cheap armour would if hit!!!

Has anyone heard these reports coming out of Australia that you can get the Delta variant just by passing an infected person on the street? Seems unlikely to me.
 
This article points out how mysterious elements of what the Delta variant does are, and how it will likely take months of study to unravel some of its mysteries. They’ve replicated some of the changes onto other viruses and they just don’t act the same was Delta does. It appears COVID in general is an odd virus in some ways. Guess we just haven’t encountered it’s type before.

Despite the government acting like its all over, the picture in England is not looking particularly good from the latest DHE figures.

A total of 1,320 people have been admitted to hospital in England with the Delta variant as of 21 June, a rise of 514 on the previous week.
902 of the 1,320 were under the age of 50, 418 were over 50.

Of the 902 under 50, 695 (77%) were unvaccinated, 79 (9%) within 21 days of their first dose of vaccine, 85 (9%) more than 21 days after their first dose of vaccine and 27 (3%) were fully vaccinated.

Of the 418 over 50, 136 (33%) were unvaccinated, nine (2%) within 21 days of their first dose of vaccine, 104 (25%) more than 21 days after their first dose of vaccine and 163 (39%) were fully vaccinated.


As of 21 June, there have been 117 deaths in England of people who were confirmed as having the Delta variant and who died within 28 days of a positive test.
Of this number, 8 were under the age of 50 and 109 were over 50.

Of the 109 over 50, 38 were unvaccinated, one was within 21 days of a first dose of vaccine, 17 more than 21 days after one dose of vaccine and 50 had received both doses.

Of the eight under 50, two were more than 21 days after a first dose of vaccine and six were unvaccinated.

So almost half of those over 50 who died had been fully vaccinated and over a third of over 50s are still being hospitalised. Even the numbers for all age groups which have had at least one dose are not encouraging at all. Still a long, long way to go given over 16,000 new cases a day at the moment.

New government data from England and Scotland is showing a growing shortfall in vaccination amongst working age men in England and younger men in Scotland.
In England, 27.7% of men aged 18-24 have had their first jab compared to 36.1% of women. Amongst men aged 25-29, 41.7% have had their first jab compared to 48.9% of women.

Men of every age are less likely to be vaccinated than women - but the differences are biggest (5% or more) amongst men under 55. Overall 55.2% of men have had their first vaccination vs. 60.8% of women.

In Scotland, 36.9% of men aged 18-29 have had their first vaccination compared to 46.8% of women.

On second vaccinations, the figures are even more stark.

In England, 10.5% of men aged 18-24 have had their second jab compared to 17.6% of women. Amongst men aged 25-29, 13.1% have had their second jab compared to 22.0% of women. Overall 39.0% of men have had their second vaccination vs. 46.4% of women.

In Scotland, 12.1% of men aged 18-29 have had their second vaccination compared to 21.9% of women – and 17.6% of men aged 30-39 have had their second vaccination compared to 30.8% of women.

Given the dramatically higher risk of hospitalisation and mortality amongst working age men, this shortfall in vaccination rates needs specific and urgent focus.

The Men’s Health Forum is calling for:

A government commitment to take action to close the gap
Detailed inequalities analysis to see if particular groups of men (age, ethnicity, work status, type of employment) are particularly likely to not get vaccinated.
Research, communications and targeted outreach and vaccination programmes to tackle complacency and reduce the barriers to uptake
Martin Tod, Chief Executive of the Men’s Health Forum commented:

These figures show that the vaccination programme is falling short amongst working-age and younger men. Given that working-age men are much more likely to die or need hospitalisation from COVID than women, this needs urgent action. Not enough has been done to make men of all ages aware of the higher risk they face – now we’re paying the price.

Don't forget James they put Covid down as the cause of death if you have a positive test within the last 28 days, it doesn't take into account any underlying health issues which may be the actual cause of death. Even if fully vaccinated if your immune system is weak or compromised then the impact of the virus on the body can still kill you .

Don't forget there are a small percentage of people who medically cannot be vaccinated, one of my friends oldest daughter falls into that category.
 
The backward and sparsely populated French department where I was born and grew up - Les Landes - now has an explosion of Delta cases.

Because it is at the corner of no and where (trapped between the Atlantic, Pyrénnées and Spanish border and opposite of Germany - 500 miles away) it had been relatively spared from the brunt of COVID so far.

Now it is badly hit. Luckily my mom is relatively isolated and safe, but still... that's bad.

What utter dross!!!! - they ony started the first vaccinations last week for the 18-25 yr olds and the under 30s only started the end of May. These stats at the End of July would prompt action, but if that's published today the stats are at best from the end of last weekend after only a week of becoming available !!!
The schedule is for the End of August/Start of Sept for all the Adult population of the UK to have been vaccinated should they wish to do so.

I am concerned about people getting double infected by Flu & COVID this winter with restrictions lifted as that will no doubt cost some lives in the vulnerable categories, I worry for my dad in that respect.

I wish them nothing bad. They have no choice, in their case, and that's a real tragedy for them.

The anti-vaxx, in the contrary... they chose their fate the wrong way - unfortunately.

COVAX is being starved of vaccines just as the pandemic unfortunately appears to be starting to ramp up in Africa. The WHO have explicitly criticised vaccinating the young in rich countries rather than giving those doses to developing nations. Your mileage may vary on if you agree with that position or not.

Already hearing of people getting multiple vaccine types ie Az + Pfizer instead of second Az jab as per Merkle and her Moderna second jab. Possibly this is the way forward. Will be disappointing if we have to start get annual covid jabs to keep ahead of the mutations.
 
No doubt this will annoy some but the WHO has updated its advice stating that the fully vaccinated should continue to wear masks due to the emergence of the Delta variant, and other precautions should continue to be practised.

It’s been my feeling that the possibility of annual vaccinations was rising with the emergence of new variants. Especially the way this virus keeps throwing curve balls so to speak. It’s not the virus is magical but more our prior lack of research into coronaviruses plus we’ve never encountered this type before I expect. I know OL93 is believed to have been a SARS virus when it first crossed to humans but I really doubt all SARS viruses are the same. Plus we’ve been living with OL93 probably for 140 years or so

The AZ and Pfizer vaccines remain broadly effective against the Delta and Kappa variants with some reduction in effectiveness which may lead to breakthrough infections. As for natural immunity that depended on which variant you had previously been infected by. These results do not cover the Delta plus variant.

Looking at the ability of antibodies in their blood samples to neutralize the variants, the risk of reinfection with the Delta variant appeared particularly high in individuals previously infected by the Beta and Gamma lineages that emerged in South Africa and Brazil, respectively.

By contrast, previous infection with the Alpha, or B117, variant first detected in Britain, conferred "reasonable" cross-protection against all variants of concern, lending itself as a template that next-generation vaccines could be molded on.

"B117 might be a candidate for new variant vaccines to provide the broadest protection," the researchers said.

Not all vaccines are created equal and though the AZ vaccine gets badmouthed it’s still a highly effective one. TBH I think you really need the vaccine equivalent of modern tank armour, and skimping on buying the best is going to see you going the same way as cheap armour would if hit!!!

To be fair, it's not at all clear that these countries would have fared better if only they had opted to wait for AZ, B/P and Moderna... By relying on the Chinese vaccines Mongolia managed to fully inoculate more than 50% of its population last time I checked, while South Korea and Japan were still hovering around 8.5%! Seeing how the first shot alone does not seem to do much of anything to protect against the Delta variant, that could not have ended well either.

Nonetheless, Coronavac will definitely not be adequate to achieve herd immunity with Delta running around. It just doesn't have the necessary efficacy rates to extinguish an outbreak with an R0 of 7, even with 100% uptake - not without help from lockdowns, masking, social distancing, etc, etc.

Countries with the option should of course choose Pfizer; it isn't actually more expensive than the Chinese vaccines.

Of course, many countries have no options at all, in which case any vaccine is better than no vaccine.

But even with Pfizer, you will probably need an 90%-ish vaccination rate to achieve herd immunity against Delta. With some social distancing, that number falls, so every incremental increase in efficacy helps (and of course, every incremental loss of efficacy hurts).

Basically, with good tactics, even ancient Type 59 tanks can overrun unprepared infantry. And without good tactics, Saudis driving M1A2 SEPs can be rather vulnerable.

The Chinese, for instance, have responded to Delta with a massive rollout of Coronavac and Sinopharm (1 billion shots over the past month) while developing an mRNA vaccine of their own and waiting for BioNtech Fosun to finish its mRNA facility in Shanghai. Like I said, any armor is better than no armor. If Coronavac can cut down the R0 down from 7 to 4-5 (e.g. by cutting transmission with an efficacy rate of 40-50%), existing test-and-trace and "easy" social distancing should be able to hold the line as it has for the past year.

At least 750 fully vaccinated people have died after contracting Covid but the CDC noted that 142 of those fatalities were asymptomatic or unrelated to Covid.
