AIM-174 Very Long Range AAM (SM-6)

I've seen CATM-120 carried with no fins and with fins on various aircraft, but the Murder Hornet does seem to like carrying them with only the tail fins. Would be interesting to know why, but it might not be all that "sexy" a reason.

I always thought that the AIM-174 was too big to fit into the F-35s bay sadly. But external carriage on hardpoints would be good they would just have to do without having full stealth capability for that particular mission.

That's what I was thinking, having externally carried AIM-174Bs with their very long range would be useful in the Pacific theatre.

It certainly does look like the AMRAAM but who knows what the AIM-260 looks like as there have been no official photos of it being released lancer21.
Look at this,AIM-260. This should be the first time the US Navy has released the appearance of the AIM-260, although it is a rendered image

It seems unlikely F-35 gets SM-6 given the plethora of hornets that can already operate that and the backlog of F-35 weapons integrations.

Maybe, maybe not. Integrating the AIM-174B with the F-35 gives an added air-to-air option also the SM-6 has secondary ASM and AShM roles too.

And probaly means a different fin and control section design to fit internal. Which makes it a unique variant of an relativ limited production version of an limited production baseline. With JATM being shown on "paper" makes me doubt any developments of SM-6 for F-35.

Several posters have pointed out that it's ~12" too long to fit inside the F-35's weapons bay so I was referring to external carriage under its' wings.

I was just pointing out another problem which they would have faced.
Except that the RIM-174 has folding tail fins, and I'm assuming that the only addition to the AIM-174 is a strongback to mount onto the pylon. If that's true, then the tail fins are folding and will fit inside a 21" square box.

There could still be interference between fins and IWB but you also got some nice wings there which ain't small. Now i (atleast) don't know the space we have so its impossible to say but its highly likely another reason why you couldnt fit an SM-6 and would need a completly new missile

Yes, there may be some internal fit issues, but we know that an SM6 fits into a 21" square box with the tail fins folded (which means the section of the fins that folds is less than 21" long).

We also know that LRASM and AARGM-ER are on the order of 25" wide, so FAXX is likely to have main weapons bays wide enough to hold 2 of those per bay. Or, if it's got a single large bay instead of 2x slightly smaller bays, it may only hold 3 total weapons that wide but have alternate hardpoints to allow more weapons that aren't as wide.

The AIM-174 program is also public information. You just have to ask for it.

Been waiting just over 100 days for a response from various sources! "You just have to ask for it" hurts my brain (then again, its a FOIA)

But you've been active on this forum since I was in preschool, so I'll get there eventually

By the time you get a response to your FOIA request, your children will be graduating high school and you'll be a forum veteran :)

Once it’s beyond 30 calendar days since the request periodically send them an email asking for an updated estimated date of completion. Occasionally this can trigger another office to put more attention on your case.

With a 30-day cadence, I would by now probably have made it into the spam filters of several FOIA offices ;) .

I tried it two or three times to get "updated estimates". It always ended with "Sorry, we cannot say, how long it will still take". I have around 10 FOIA requests currently running, and my attitude is "It would be nice to get a reply, but if it takes forever, I can still live with it". I'm not a professional researcher.

Also, TBH, with the current "America first, and slash 'unnecessary' government services left and right" attitude in the USA, I sometimes wonder how long I as a non-American will still be entitled to file FOIA requests at all.

With my MDS request, it had been sitting there for over a year until I asked for a new estimated date of completion. Then the next day poof, I had a final response with the document.

I've seen this before with other DoD components as well. Often the request is handed off to another office that has responsibility for the record, and they do nothing for a long time. Asking for an ETA causes the FOIA office to contact them and ask what's up, which sometimes provokes movement.

Congress and the courts have been very clear, FOIA is available to everyone, even non-US citizens. There is one set of circumstances where that is not true, but IIRC that is only for certain requests by non-US parties to intelligence agencies.
