Aha, saw this a few years ago and wondered...

I'm glad to see work come to fruition.

Another company, Festo, has worked on several biomimetic robots too (lighter-than-air 'jellyfish', 'penguins', 'mantas' etc.), though they don't seem very interested in pushing commercial or military applications.

It's actually quite large. How is it being transported to theatre? Aircraft, ships, submarines? And then what kind of range does it have once its operating independently?

It's not *that* big. The wide shots with the small boats are playing some perspective tricks. Judging from this shot with people standing on it, it's probably trailerable without the "wings" installed.

Range is quite long but it's not fast -- the article talks about it being a buoyancy-propelled glider, so basically it sinks to gain forward momentum, then rises by expelling ballast, and repeats. That gives you a couple of knots, so an underwater fighter plane this is not.

I would not expect this to be a combat platform per se, though possibly it could be a minelayer like the Orca. Probably it is primarily a sensor platform and possibly a carrier for emplaced seafloor sensors.
