Turboprop conversions – built and unbuilt

Thanks Thomas!

I wasn't sure where to put the jet Me264 - maybe we need a piston-to-jet category ;D

The rest have been added to the lists. About the Trans-Caribbean Turbo Canso, any mention of engine type in Jane's? (I wonder if this firm is in any way related to Trans-Caribbean Airways of the Netherlands Antilles?)

Good question Jens.

Should we start a new "Turboshaft conversions – built and unbuilt" topic?

Added a few more: HAMC Y-11 to Y-11T/Y-12, Yak-18s, Yak-52, Yak-152, Su-26, PA-18T Super Cub, Van's RV-4T, and Mooney 301 to Socata TBM700.

Plus about a dozen others, mostly M601-related.

Does anyone know the current status of the Integrity Aircraft single-turbine Trislander project?

I'm also puzzled by Turbo Dak duplications ... DC-3-65TP is attributed to Shafer, AMI Turbo, Professional Aviation (which I think was just an operator), and Dodson Aviation (who I think is just fitting kits). Does anyone know for sure?

BTW, Professional Aviation was also listed as "Jet Prop DC-3" and "C-47TP Super Dakota", both of which sound pretty generic. Shafer is also credited with a DC-3-67TP. No model given but it could be up to 1650 shp per engine (if PT6A-67CFs used).

Update

- 'AMI Turbo' - or, more properly, Aero Modifications International (AMI) of Fort Worth, TX - developed the DC-3-65TP conversion kit. This involved the installation of two P&WC PT6A-65AR turboprops (each flat-rated to 1,230 shp) driving 5-bladed Hartzell propellers. Marketed as the DC-3-65TP Cargomaster, AMI received their STC for the DC-3-65TP in Aug 1987.

- Schafer Aircraft Modifications of Waco, TX, converted the initial 7 x SAAF C-47TPs in the early '90s using AMI-supplied kits.

- Wonder Air (Pty) Ltd at Wonderboom (Pretoria) also performed DC-3-65TP conversions (eg: c/n 42978 in 2001). AFAIK, Wonder Air is no more but former owner, Gert de Klerk, has a number of Dak airframes stored for potential turboprop conversions.

- Wonder Air was eclipsed by Pretoria-based BSAS International (Braddick Specialised Air Services) which took over C-47/DC-3 PT6A conversions. The PT6A-67F was added to optional powerplants, as revealed by BSAS International's designation style - producing C-47- or DC-3-65ARTP, -67RTP, and -67FTP conversions. That said, BSAS conversions for the SAAF are simply styled C-47TPs.

- Professional Aviation Services of Lanseria, RSA, was not a DC-3-65TP operator but an aircraft broker and lessor. Professional Aviation's brandings were simply marketing names for AMI DC-3-65TP conversions - with C-47TP Super Dakota proposed for military variants and Jet Prop DC-3 for civilian roles.

- Dodson Aviation Inc. is an Ottawa, KS-based aircraft broker which has bought many of the SAAF conversions for use by civilian operators. Related Dodson International Parts South Africa (Pty) Ltd was also local supplier of PT6A-65AR engines. Parent firm, Dodson International Parts, is based out of Rantoul, KS.

I think, we've still yet forgotten the SE.116 Voltigeur. The first prototype
flew with Wright C7BA1 piston engines, whereas the second aircraft was
fitted with Bastan turboprops. Interestingly, the more or less identical
SE.117 was finished with Bastan engines, but it was proposed, to revert to
the Wright engines later !
The contending SIPA 1100 flew with piston engines, but there was a project
to fit Bastan turboprops, too.

Thanks Jens!

I've added the SE.116/SE.117 and S.1100 as well as the HAL HPT-32/HTT-32 Deepak conversion.

Most 1944 UK Brabazon Committee civil Types were intended as Mark 1, recip/Mk.II turbine:
Type I Bristol T.167 Brabazon Mk.I/coupled Centaurus was to be Mk.II with coupled Proteus;
Type IIA AS.57 Ambassador, Mk.I 2xCentaurus; Mk.2 4xASM Mamba. It did fly as FTB with Tyne;
Type IIB VC2 Viceroy, 2xCentaurus; before flight became VC2 Viscount/Dart;
Type III, then MRE: Bristol T.175, ordered as 4xCentaurus; changed 1950 before flight to Britannia 100/4xProteus;
Type IIIC Avro 689 Tudor 2/Merlin; Mk.II intended Theseus;
Type VA M.60/H.P.R.1 Marathon, Mk.I 4xGipsy Queen, Mk.2 intended 2xMamba (so flown as FTB).
(Do you count Napier Nomad as turbine-affected? Short/Saro Shetland, 4xCentaurus: Mk.II so bid to BOAC, who laughed).
(Mamba and Dart were initiated for (to be BP Balliol/Avro Athena, which went the other way - to Merlin).

The greatest What-if...? was mid-1947 pitch to UK Cabinet for $ for Bristol licenced L-849, Centaurus Mk.1, Theseus Mk.2. Denied (UK was profoundly broke), else: no DC-7, L-1649, L-188, Britannia. Instead: a DC-6T, either T-34 or RR Clyde, maybe licenced in France.

Excellent stuff -- thank you!

I'm reorganizing the original lists to make them more usable. I'll add these along with those complied by boxkite (thanks again, Thomas!).

ADDED - Lists rationalized and updated. Most are re-mounted below (corrections and additions most welcome).

TSRJoe: Thanks! Mamba-Vihuri has been added to the list.

Jens: I think that is Invader N26GT rather than a Marauder (nice to see the photo though). There were a few turbojet Marauder testbeds but I haven't heard of any turboprops.

Oops, Apophenia you're absolutely right, its an Invader, as the upward opening
cockpit shows, sorry :-[
But what a stupid idea, to use the same designation for two different aircraft in
such a short timeframe ! ;)

Blame it on the "no room for Attack" mentality the Air Force had at the time, but that really is for a different thread.

A few additions (mostly engine type details) -- all related to PT6A conversions.

Added conversions: Aero Commander 680T (PAC PT6-20 conversion), Northern Consolidated's 'half a Turbo Mallard' proof-of-concept conversion (one piston/one turboprop), Piper PA-31T Navajo (Cheyenne prototype), and the Swearingen SA26-T.

BTW, the original Harbin Y-11T used PT6A-11s swapped by P&WC for 7 surplus JT15D-4. The jet engines were intended for a Chinese business aircraft. Does anyone know anything about that unbuilt biz-jet design?

Is the Aero Commander 680T also a prototype? Note that production turbine Aero Commanders were all equipped with Garretts.

'Ray,

The PT6A-20-powered 680T was a conversion by PAC Holdings of Everett, WA. Design work was by Swearingen Aircraft -- Drawing List No. 3001-DL (10/31/66, revised 11/3/66). Unfortunately, the only photo I've seen shows a fresh, bare metal conversion (other than the new cowlings) with no registration markings applied.

The FAA Supplemental Type Certificate is SA710SW (filed 02/16/1966) issued to Rockwell (now Twin Commander Aircraft Corporation) but PAC is holder of the STC. STC SA710SW was amended in May 2004 but, AFAIK, no other PT6 conversions were done.

Tailspin Turtle noted that the Allison/Soloy "Turbine Mentor 420" and unbuilt Bell XV-3 T-53 conversions were missing. Both have been added (as a convertiplane, the XV-3 seemed to qualify).

TT also mentioned the Goodyear GZ-22 blimp ("Spirit of Akron" with Allison 250-B17s) evolved from the smaller, IO-360-powered GZ-20A series.

Hi,

here is the Fairchild Turboxcar,it was powered by four T55 Lycoming
turboprop engines (project).

A long time ago I saw a C-337 convert that was a single turboprop in the rear, and had had around 30 inches, up front, added to it.
Can anyone tell me the name?

On page 7 of this thread, Apophenia mentioned the Robertson
O-2ST as a pusher turbopor conversion of the O-2A. Couldn't
find nay photo of it, only of the Conroy Stolifter, were the FORWARD
engine was replaced by AiR TPE331, to give a spaciaous rear fuselage.

Did a Google search and finally found a book with a photo of a O-2ST "Cessna 337". I put the link in here. Now I'm going to try and find a copy of the book. Thank you, for your help, I needed the name for the search.

http://books.google.com/books?id=Wb2I5GEF--QC&pg=PA247&lpg=PA247&dq=Robertson+O-2ST&source=bl&ots=Ep2C_IfNqK&sig=QBKpB4wHjykSRBrm-bNAAcRJQhg&hl=en&ei=gzGxScuAAp6Dtwe5wom8Bw&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result

Sorry guys, I had an image of the O-2ST. I thought this thread was dead and dumped it :(

Robertson did the design work but the mods were performed by Sierra Industries. The actual concept came directly from Cessna but they didn't want to be directly involved. The O-2ST seems to have had CIA or other such connections. The Sandcrab name sprang from the intended customer -- Saudi Arabia.

If you squint, you can make out the general O-2ST layout here

http://books.google.ca/books?id=Wb2I5GEF--QC&pg=PA182&lpg=PA182&dq=sierra+%22O-2ST%22+sandcrab&source=bl&ots=Ep2C1GdPpK&sig=yshQm3sWTIBU9U2q8aKbB5eI1_g&hl=en&ei=MXC1SdiQF5KWsQP3zeSUAQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result

As Thomas just again pointed to this thread, I've recently got a Morane-Saulnier
projetcs list, with a type that actually thrilled me, a MS.502 conversion to turboprop,
or, just to use a readily understandable name, a "Turbo-Storch" ! ;)

(Attention, this is just a provisional drawing only !)

Very cool. Thanks Jens.

Was this turbo Criquet conversion actually built? I'm guessing the turbine is an Artouste??

"I'm guessing the turbine is an Artouste??"

An Astazo was intended and, no, it wasn't built. But the designation given in this
list is "MS.506", so I think, the examples flying around with continental engines and
designated MS.506, too, got their designations just by the owners or the company,
who did these modifications, not by S, or SOCATA, as its successor.

P.S.: Will do a better drawing later, based on engine size and shape ...

Thanks Jens. Added as unbuilt MS.506 conversion from MS.502.

I discovered a crime!
A Cessna 195 with a turboprop with Brazilian registration PT-ZPN.
Does anyone know the correct engine type?

The standard engine would be a 520 to 550 cubic inch Lycoming or Continental, I don't know off the top of my head, it's easy to look up. As for the turboprop conversion itself, well, it's his plane, a lot of people go for the Soloy turboprop conversion on the similarly-sized 206 so people obviously feel it to be useful.

EDIT: Thought it was a 185 at first, anyway the original engine was a radial Jacobs, not quite sure on exact displacement off the top of my head. Once again it's not hard to look up.

Most probable enigine is a TPE331, though it could be an Allsion 250 which would be a lighter engine. After all, someone replaced the Lycoming IO360 in a Great Lakes sport biplane with an Allison 250 and got, IIRC, twice the horespower at no significant change in weight. From everything I read, it put on stunnign displays.
