A classical piece with an interesting backstory, comissioned to write incidental music for the China set play 'Turandot' (Basis for the later opera by Puccini.).

Rather than simply write his own tune, Weber chose instead to turn to one of the first books on China in Europe. Written by a Jesuit priest who had visited the Ming court, it contained the first pieces of Chinese music transcribed into the European notation system. Weber orchestrated the piece he chose for a full orchestra producing a striking musical hybrid.
