Having heard what I suspect was the second of the covers of this particular song (Made for the film 'Cars'.) on the radio while out shopping, here is the original and the known covers...
By the way, Bellman, the name of one of Peel's hounds in the song, is the man on a ship who tolls the hours, which leads to Lewis Carroll's 'The Hunting of the Snark' and in London gangster slang, the bellman is the one who disables the alarms in a robbery. This in turn leads to the film Bellman and True, which takes the song as its theme. The British get the sheer seediness of crime like no others.
Tubular Bells works perfectly on so many levels - a truly mesmerizing and utterly brilliant, but deceptively simple and crystal clean and pure composition, if I may say so as a half tone deaf utterly musically ignorant aficionado. To be honest, I think though that the tune is way too clean, clinical and slick for a horror flick, but since I never watched The Exorcist and never will, I'm just happy to enjoy the hypnotic theme music .
A 2020 film, The Vast of Night. Microbudget and not very original, but that's the point - it's a loving homage to The Twilight Zone (and the radio station that plays a major part is WOTW!). Don't expect any space battles but it's well worth seeing as an exercise in dialogue, style and atmosphere.
