Hi,

the Sukhoi S-54 (Su-17M4N) which later redesigned as S-56 (Su-17M5) was a fixed
wing project version of Su-17,it had 45 degree of swept, can anybody imagine its
shape ?.

Su-17 fuselage with Su-7 wing?

No my dear Famvburg,

the same wing of Su-17,but as a fixed wing, not swing wing.

@ hesham: fixed wing, just like PaulMM and you yourself write.

From the Midland 'OKB Sukhoi' by Yefim Gordon et.al. about the S-54N/S-56
A decision was made to return to a fixed wing design based on a new aerodynamic configuration. A new wing was designed that was fixed at the intermediate sweep (45o) of the original movable wing.
Most likely the same fuselage for the S-56 as the one on the S-54.
Su-7 had a 60o wing sweep angle.
famvburg suggestion would be close to what the S-56 would have looked like, just with a less sharply swept wing.

The export version of the S-54/Su-17M4 was the S-54K/Su-22M4. Both were identified as Fitter-K by NATO.

Where my dear Paul ?,

and for my Arjen,it was not fixed wing.

Yefim Gordon and his co-authors write it would have had a fixed wing.

Apologies for some heavy editing in my previous post.

Do you think this is accurate to the actual drawings or just a guess?

I imagined the Su-17M4n and Su-17M6 as partly synergising with the S-37 style wing (i.e. low wing-loading cranked delta in the style of the F-16XL or MiG-21I Analog). But I'm juts guessing myself.

It is accurate, it was described as effectively just fixing the VG sweep wing to its most useful position. There's a model photo in the article hesham cites.

In regards to the SU-17M5 characteristics, the fixed wing allowed extra fuel to be carried which increased range, speed wasn't really affected, range increased, and both takeoff and landings improved. Maximum G went from 7 to 8.

Let me guess, this wing is a compound/cranked swept with with 60-degree sweep for inner wing and 45-degree sweep for outer wing?

Also, does anyone have any info on the avionics that the Su-17M5 may have had? I know that it definitely was slated to use an AL-31F turbofan for an engine for sure.

In 1980, the development of the Su-26K (later Su-17M5) began, focusing on improving all-weather and round-the-clock capabilities, as well as expanding the range of weapons. The aircraft was to be equipped with a laser-television guidance system "Ryabina", and suspended containers with radar "Kinzhal" and thermal imaging system "KhOD". The number of suspension points was planned to be increased to 12, and new missiles such as X-25MJ1/P/T1/MTII, X-31P, and S-13L were to be used.

A technical proposal was prepared and sent to the Ministry of Aviation Industry and the military, but the project did not progress further, possibly due to overlap with the more promising Su-25T/TM projects.

Sorry for the bad translation with a little help of OCR and AI. Maybe our Russian members will provide a better summery sometime soon. :)

Thanks you fightingirish.
Going by the diagram, you've kindly posted, am I right to interpret that it's showing over-wing mounting of K-73 AAM's - aka SEPECAT Jaguar style?

Indeed, exactly what I was thinking - in more ways than one the -M5 closely parallels the Jaguar, that being one of them. Others include the turbofan engine and the fixed wing of moderate sweep (as opposed to the turbojet and VG wing on e.g. the MiG-27),. There's a bit of A-7 in there too (single engine, nose intake, relatively high wing aspect ratio) although of course it still retains reheat and supersonic dash capability - so ultimately closest to the Jaguar in conception, IMHO.
