Looks very like the BAC Drone...

cheers,
Robin.

That certainly makes sense as Aviafrance lists the SFAN II as a derivative of the Drone. Still the V-struts and stub wings appear to be innovations.

Yes my dears,

the SFAN 1 was based on BAC Drone.

More on the SFAN 5 from FLIGHT, November 19, 1936, p.556:

The Société Française d'Aviation Nouvelle exhibit a new type, the S.F.A.N. 5. This is a side-by-side two-seater, with the cockpit shielded by a large wide windscreen which sweeps up to the wing. Owing to the fact that the stub which carries the wing is ''hollow ground" and the fuselage width narrows fairly abruptly behind the cockpit, there is an open gap on each side at the back which should assist ventilation without causing draught in the cockpit. The engine of the S.F.A.N. 5 is a Train of 60 h.p., mounted above the wing and driving a pusher airscrew.

And an image, same source, p.554 (attached).

According to Aviation populaire ou aviation prolétaire by Vital Ferry, "The Farman Moustique, Léopoldoff Colibri and SFAN motorglider were produced in small numbers." It is not clear from the reference, however, whether we are talking about the earlier single-seat models or the two-seater presented here.

But according to the neat French glider database www.j2mcl-planeurs.net, which I just realized also includes motorgliders, the SFAN 5 was a one-off enclosed variant of the earlier SFAN 4, itself only built in a production run of--get ready for it--two machines, so I think we could safely move this topic to the "Early Aircraft Projects" sub-forum among other prototypes that never made it to production.

I try to list the SFAN production based on the very few information I have. I do not have any data about unbuilt project from this company:

SFAN 1 – Single seat ultra-light aircraft powered by one 28 hp Poinsard 2B pusher engine. First flight July 1935, 1 prototype + 25 built
SFAN 2 – Enhanced variant of SFAN.1, powered by one 25 hp Ava 4A00 pusher engine, with repliable wings. 1936, 20 built
SFAN II – Version of SFAN 2 with modified landing gear and fixed wings. 1936, 9 built
SFAN H3 – Former SFAN 2 c/n 5 fitted with two floats, powered by one 35 hp Poinsard 2NY pusher engine. First flight 28th September 1936, 1 copy
SFAN 4 – Twin seat ultra-light aircraft powered by one 32 hp Mengin 2A01 (prototype) or one 40 hp Train 4A01 (series) pusher engine. 1936, 1 prototype + 7 built
SFAN 5 – Version of SFAN 4 fitted with crew cabin, powered by one 60 hp Train 6T pusher engine. 1936, 1 built
SFAN 5.1– Former SFAN 5 re-engined after war with one 65 hp Continental A65.8 pusher engine. 1951, 1 copy
SFAN 11 – two-seat aircraft liaison aircraft designed for technical program A77 (category L2), powered by one 220 hp Renault 6Q01. 1st flight 13 January 1940, 1 built

Also a funny experimentation by Mr. Elie Billioque using a SFAN II in 1938.
