Here's another model that can be identified through the trove of photos recently posted by the San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM) Archives on Flickr, the Ryan Model 86 (Ryan 86).

As described in the photo:
"The RYAN MODEL 86 is a supersonic active seeking missile operating in the medium altitude range. It is capable of ground or air launching. Carrying a 300 pound High Explosive or Nuclear Warhead; it may be used as a ground to air, round to ground, air to air or an air to ground weapon."

Another SDASM Flickr find, a couple of pages of a Teledyne Ryan Model Number list that may should be able to add a few numbers and fill in the blanks on some other numbers.

Included are the numbers for TEAL RAIN (Ryan Model 304 or Ryan Model 283), a Ryan number for the Rockwell HiMAT (Ryan Model 282), presumably due to Teledyne Ryan's involvement with HiMAT's flight test maneuver autopilot and backup flight control system. Ryan Model 272 is listed as a USAF "Harassment Vehicle". Something with the name "LOCUST" (Ryan Model 309) that, given the chronology of some of the other model numbers, doesn't seem to fit the unsolved mystery that is the "Locust" here on Secret Projects (http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,13028.0.html).

Anyway, here's the two pages of the list located so far:

"LOTOP" is sparringly described in the abstract for "Preliminary Criteria & Loads Analysis: Phase I, LOTOP Project-- Ryan Model 109," authored by Hood, A.E., Sandia National Labs (OSTI Identifier:10151210; Report Nos. SC-DC-66-1917X; ALSNL199700000757; ON: DE98056532; CNN: AT-(29-1)-789):
The Phase I Design Study for the Sandia Corporation resulted in a configuration of an external store delivery system designated as the Ryan Model 109-G. The latter is a low altitude external store capable of performing a loop-type trajectory.

I've just come across these posts, Boxman, and I heartily thank you for all the great finds!
There used to be a time when I'd regularly browse through the SDASM archives for more new Ryan stuff, but I must admit I stopped doing it at some point, thinking that by now they must have put online everything they had... How wrong was I!

What I had about the Model 109/G (my transcription of it had a slash instead of a hyphen) was basically the same info as yours. I can add a date for it, though: it was studied in 1956.

A new visit to the SDASM Teledyne Ryan collection has brought to light a few more discoveries:

  • an artist's concept which is described as a "possible Model 60 Anti-Radiation Air-to-Air Missile concept,"
  • a mockup of the Model 118 Rogue target proposal,
  • an artist's concept of the Model 136 Fire Fly proposal,
  • a "possible Model 170 Rockeye II" missile in mockup form,
  • a cutaway view of the previously unheard of Model 285 Compass Cope II proposal,
  • two art concepts of the "Aerolab subsidiary sounding rocket."

To this I should add that there are also great new photos of the Model 29 Dark Shark (Navy XF2R-1), Model 36 Firebird (Navy XAAM-N-1), of the Model 255 (AQM-34V) in flight, of the Model 329 Spirit aircraft in model form, and of the Model 262 Manta Ray, among many others.

Also, using the partial list that Boxman has shared with us (thanks again!), I was able to properly label a picture I had as the Model 278 Vertiwing Technology Development Vehicle (this artist's concept was previously only titled "C 5356 Vertiwing (Model 278) and A-7").

That was a mistake, one that has complicated my work at some point actually. JANE'S called "Model 272" what was actually the Model 262.

Now of course there is a possibility that the Model 272 "USAF Harrassment Vehicle" might be an Air Force adaptation of the Manta Ray concept, but at this point it's only speculation.

This being said, you have unwittingly given us a great clue as to what the Model 268 was!! ;) ;D

No problem. I've tried my best to identify and tag as many of the images as I can. It's like finding the pieces of an enormous jigsaw puzzle, where there's no box picture to provide a clue as to what you're putting together - until you come across more clues and info within the collection that might not be posted by SDASM for months or years.

In case it might help, here's a link to the Ryan designation lists (approximately 10 page images, some typed, some handwritten) I've come across, identified, and tagged so far in the SDASM Archive's Flickr Photostream:

Interesting to note the differences between the XF2R-1 as shown in your cutaway and the aircraft as actually built; that is, squared-off wing and fin tips, and NACA inlets for the jet engine.

Ryan Aeronautical and Teledyne Ryan Type Number Designations

Stargazer2006's excellent Ryan list was updated to 22 Sept 2012. I thought it was time to do a further update. There's still lots of missing Ryan and TDA designations. I have left is speculated upon designations but not projects/products without model numbers assigned. (Perhaps a separate listing of designs/military designations which are 'missing' Ryan model numbers would be useful?)

For completeness, I have added in more non-aircraft Ryan/TDA products (some of which aren't aviation-related at all). I have retained (and expanded upon) Stéphane's 3-numeral Continental Aviation and Engineering/Teledyne CAE engine designations. But there's a major caveat: Teledyne Inc didn't buy out T. Claude Ryan’s holdings until 1969 - Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical (TRA) being formed 02 Jan 1969. So, in this listing, there is a bunch of duplicate designations (which are noted). The obvious problem is ... just because a CAE designation is listed, doesn't mean there wasn't a pre-1969 Ryan Aeronautical design using that exact same number.

I have also included some Continental piston engines with three-digit type numbers. This is probably going even further out on a tenuous limb since, AFAIK, all of those numbers are based on displacement (eg: the LDS-417 truck engine displacing 427 cid). That being the case, I might have also included Continental's model numbers based on aircraft engine displacement. But I didn't. Call it whim. (If moderators prefer, such engine entries can be easily removed.)

For these listings, I have inserted 'missing' numbers in hopes of filling them in as Model numbers are found. I've only done this up to Model 490 (beyond that, there be dragons). As Stéphane had noted, many of the 500 Series designations are for avionics but there are also TRA experimental engine cores as well. The 600 and 700 Series are all electronics as are the 1000 Series. I find no hint of a 900 Series.

Ryan/TRA model numbers begin chronologically but do not remain so. The form is simply Model + Number with optional sub-type Letter (and suffix number if needed). Many sub-type Letters are recorded with slashes or hyphen but, going by the Ryan Reporter, this form was not used internally by the company. Still, I have noted some of these anomalies as 'also known as' entries. I hope that this relisting is useful.

Thanks Sherman Tank, that would be great!

I had wondered if the 'missing' numbers might be pre-war or WW2 designs. Plenty of corporate designations lists include some back-dated 'rationalizing' in an effort to tidy things up a bit.

It's hard to tell because there was more than one Ryan aircraft company (the most famous one was either the third or fourth) so the earliest "Ryan" aircraft might not even be in the same numerical sequence as the Fireball and the Vertijet.

Quite so. Still, hard to imagine a reason to start a new designation series beginning with '26'.

Mind you, we don't even have an exact year for that Model 26 dive bomber

@Apophenia: awesome list. Fantastic job ! Was looking for something like that.

I didn't knew the Chinese not only shot down Model 147H, but cloned them and their small J69 turbojets - into the WP-11 for the WZ-5 drones.

Stargazer2006's excellent Ryan list was updated to 22 Sept 2012. I thought it was time to do a further update.
And so you did! Thanks a LOT for the wealth of information therein, and the few designations I'd never heard about.
A few comments and additions:
  • 170: ROCKEYE II cluster bomb
  • 178: radio-relay drone, could carry a 300-pound payload to 44,000 feet and remain on station for upwards of 20 hours
  • 185: FIREFISH remotely piloted light boat
  • 195: PRECISION DROP GLIDER (1966), tests conducted in NASA's 30 x 60-foot, open-throat wind tunnel
  • 257: METRO DRONE Air Sampler RPV, a modified Model 124
  • 260: same as Model 166F, therefore a FIREBEE II (no relation with Scaled whatsoever!)
  • 267: I have this as the CO1 ("see-owe-one") Mini RPV, not G01 ("gee-zero-one")
  • 320: may have received the company name INTIMIDATOR

... 267: I have this as the CO1 ("see-owe-one") Mini RPV, not G01 ("gee-zero-one")...

Great stuff, Stéphane! I have incorporated your corrections and additions into 'my' list.

But the story of the Model 267 gets curiouser and curiouser ... I've just realized that Ryan drawings show 'GOI' - so, 'gee-owe-eye'.

When I see a GOx acronym, I think: Government of I... does anyone know of other US Government acronyms which are more procurement related? Or, is that 'I' actually meant to be a Roman numeral '1'?

Government of Israel is a good guess, particularly as Model 124I for Israel is documented. But then there is also Iran...

Gosh! Seems that we both were wrong! It does look a lot like "gee-owe-eye", and Government of I... seems a credible interpretation of it! In other words, the Model 267 would have been an export version of the Model 262?

An export version of the Model 262 makes sense of the images. Then some added feature of the export offer caught the eye of the USAF and we have the Model 267-C proposal.

Of course, but I believe the company considered they had done 25 aircraft before that and started using a standardized numbering system from 26 onwards. It could be a coincidence, but if I look at the history of Ryan's early production, I find quite exactly 25 undesignated main types (23 aircraft and 2 equipments). Chances are the first 25 numbers (if ever allocated individually, which is not certain) would cover all these early Ryan types:
  • STANDARD AIRLINER (1923)
  • SPEEDSTER
  • CLOUDSTER (1926)
  • M-1/-1C (1926)
  • B-1/-1 Special/-1X BROUGHAM (1926)
  • M-2/-2C (1927)
  • NYP-1/-2 (1927)
  • B-2 BROUGHAM (1928)
  • M-3C
  • B-3/-3A BROUGHAM (1928)
  • X-1 (Mahoney-Ryan) (1928)
  • B-5/-5A (1929)
  • B-7 BROUGHAM (1929)
  • C-1/-1A FOURSOME (1930)
  • C-2 FOURSOME (1930)
  • S-T SPORT TRAINER (1934)
  • S-C/-W SPORT COUPE (1937)
  • S-T-1 Army PT-16 series (1939)
  • S-T-2 Army PT-20 series + exports (1939)
  • YO-51 DRAGONFLY (1940)
  • S-T-3 Army PT-21 & PT-22/Navy NR-1 RECRUIT series (1941)
  • SOR-1 SEAGULL (Curtiss subcontract, cancelled) (1942)
  • S-T-4 Army PT-25 (1942-43)
  • components for U.S.A.A.F. B-24 LIBERATOR (1943)
  • .50-caliber, twin-gun turret for the PBY-5 CATALINA flying boats

Model 92.
