Hi,

Molniya (Lightning) design bureau organised 1976 at MAPO (Moscow Aviation Production Organization) to produce reusable aerospace vehicle inspired by NASA Shuttle. MAPO traditionally a MiG factory, and Mikoyan already responsible for much _ space-related work, including MiG-105. General Designer Gleb Ye.
Lozino-Lozinskii (ex-MiG). Work in partnership with NPO ‘Energiya’ named for S. P. Korolyev at Kaliningrad, producer of launcher. In 1989 became NPO Molniya engaged in civil Konversiya projects.

Gleb Lozino-Lozinskiy's patronymic was Yevgenyevich. So please change his initial from the cyrillic E to a transliterated Ye.

As for your "NPO ‘Energiya’ Imeni S. P. Korolyev", as you have been told before, имени (imeni) is not a given name. Usually assigned the Russian abbreviation им., имени simply means 'named' (as in 'named after' or 'named for').

His proper name was Sergei Pavlovich Korolev. For completeness: Ракетно-космическая корпорация «Энергия» им. С. П. Королёва (Raketno-kosmicheskaya korporatsiya «Energiya» im. S. P. Korolova) translates as the Rocket and Space Corporation "Energia" named after S.P. Korolev.

BTW: Both Lozino-Lozinskiy and Korolev were born in Ukraine.

- Molniya-1 (011) ...

Molniya-1 is the actual designation. Your "Molniya-1 (011)" is not a designation - it is the construction number (more accurately, Molniya-1-011).

Similar msns are listed on the kupichic.ru page - Molniya-1-012, '1-015, and '1-017. Those particular msn were noted because they indicate engine changes and/or other modifications. These were:

- Molniya-1-011: Westernized model with 350 hp Lycoming TIO-540 HO6 & Bendix King avionics
- Molniya-1-012: Domestic model with 360 hp Vedeneyev M-14P radial and Russian avionics
- Molniya-1-015: Export model with Vedeneyev M-14P (or Μ-14NTK) and Bendix King avionics
- Molniya-1-017: Export modification; liquid-cooled 350 hp Teledyne Continental TSIOL-550 HO6

And, FWIW, @dan_inbox has just supplied an image of the Molniya-2. This shows twin 180 hp engines mounted above the wing, each engine with its own 3-bladed pusher prop. Perhaps the Molniya-2 that you described - "Molniya-2 (022)" - with twin 210 hp engines driving a single prop through a combining gearbox - was a later concept?

For the Molniya-5, the FPS you mention stands for the Федеральная пограничная служба (Federal'naya pogranichnaya sluzhba) or Federal Border Service. Therefore, presumably, the Molniya-5 was another Molniya-1 derivative - this time optimised for border patrol duties.

You should perhaps also note that the Russian useage of триплан (triplan) does not mean what 'triplane' suggests in English. Rather than a 'triple-decker', it refers to three surfaces - wings, canard, and more conventional tailplane.

OK my dear Apophenia,I will re-set it,and many thanks.

I'm not sure that you can safely say either of the above. When I wrote: "Perhaps the Molniya-2 that you described - "Molniya-2 (022)" - with twin 210 hp engines driving a single prop through a combining gearbox - was a later concept?", I tried to make clear that this was entirely speculative.

If you can confirm your "Molniya-2 (022)", I would suggest that this construction number followed on from the Molniya-1 series. Without confirmation, it remains speculative. That said, I can find no evidence whatsoever for your new "Molniya-1 (022)".

And, please, could you correct your original post. As pointed out, "NPO ‘Energiya’ Imeni S. P. Korolyev" would translate as 'NPO ‘Energiya’ named for S. P. Korolyev'. If, for some inexplicable reason, you wish to retain your transliterated имени, then note the lower case и.

It's not a speculation at all,it's real one,and from,

Thanks. I asked for confirmation and you have given it ... to a degree ('Molniya-1' being implied by the msn used as a 'designation').

Thanks too for changing "Imeni".
