I am looking for publishers interested in paper format for my new book "Mysterious Lights over the Reich". It is a demystifying research work based on scientific concepts and historical data; it will be ready for publication at the beginning of March.

Synopsis:

There are two types of lights in the sky: the usual ones and the weird things.

“Possibly a naturally occurring phenomenon?”

-St. Elmo’s Fires. -Luminous phenomena generated during volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, large thunderstorms, tornadoes, large fires and nuclear explosions. -Luminous atmospheric phenomena recently discovered by satellite cameras: Sprites, Elves, dark blue luminous waterfalls and strange pulses of gamma rays that are emitted from the interior of the planet into space.-Ball Lightnings.

“The human factor”

-Low temperatures, breakdown of thermal suits, freezing oxygen masks, faults in the oxygen supply, fatigue of battle, the searchlights + Flak + Benzedrine tablets cocktail.

In the slang of bombing crews and night fighters, unknown luminous phenomena were called by many different nicknames: The Thing, The Light, Balls of Fire, Flak Phenomena, Orange comet-like objects, Large meteor-like balls, Huge orange ball, Pyrotechnic Activity, Pyrotechnics Phenomenon, Catherine Wheels, Aerial minefields, Fire-like glow, Chandelier Flares, Kraut Fireballs, Silver Disks, Floating Silver balls, Christmas Trees, Scarecrow flares, Scarecrow Flak Burst, Flash less Flak, Fire-like glow, Yellowish-red intermittent glow, Phosphorescent Golden Sphere and Odd luminous aerial phenomena.

Peculiar incidents reported by pilots would be the labeling of various phenomena:

-The glow of ground fires reflected on the clouds. -Nickel packages (propaganda leaflets bundles).-Window packages (chaff bundles).-Tracer bullets observed from certain angles.-Parachute marker flares.-Ground-to-air missiles (experimental prototypes without warhead).-Vehicle headlights pointed upwards when they were going up a slope.-Corona discharges generated by the electronic equipment of the observer aircraft.-Ground decoy fires.-Wandering barrage balloon (Sperrballon).-Crew parachutes illuminated from below by fires or by searchlights.

In 1942, all the weird things without explanation began to be identified only with the words Foo Fighters from a comic book.

Under this label were grouped natural luminous phenomena, technological by-products, hallucinations, false perception of movements and secret German weapons.

- The swinging stars autokinetic illusion phenomenon. - Vestibular-induced illusions in night flight. -Optical illusions oculargravic and oculargyral.

“Static Electricity”

-It is difficult to evaluate how much static electricity can be generated by a thousand airframes, four thousand engines and twelve thousand airscrew blades, interacting among them over a burning city. The engines of that time did not burn the fuel very efficiently, a great part was expelled unburnt through the exhaust pipes. A burning flame is full of charged particles that can be affected by an electric field. Scientists knew that burning fuel generates electrons and ions. In recent years several experiments have shown that electric fields cause an ‘ionic wind’ which can affect the shape of the flame. The electric field was increased close to the fuel outlet and this increase was caused by negatively charged ions of partially burned fuel. Windows, gun turrets, navigator astrodomes and radar radomes of these bombers had many plastic parts that became electrically charged when going through the air rarefied by Flak explosions, luminous markings, flares, missile trails and their unburned propellants, smoke and strange chemical substances dispersed after the burning a big city.

- The ground fires were generally started with phosphorus bombs that could generate firestorms, and their effects over the electromagnetic environment have not yet studied in detail.

Phosphorus and soot particles, transported to high altitude by the firestorm, were in suspension in the atmosphere during months creating false aurora borealis and other strange luminescent phenomena.

A propeller must impart momentum to the passing air, viscosity results in a series of helicoidal vortex around the aircrew blades.

Whenever the air is passed through by an object at high speed, both the object and the air become electrically charged. Not being able to quickly be discharged on the ground, this electricity generates a lot of not yet well studied physical phenomena.

- The behavior of electric charges in the air depending on altitude, humidity, temperature and purity.

A dry, warm and polluted air crowded by airplanes is the best environment for the appearance of luminescent phenomena.

Ionized gases (plasmas) are electromagnetic entities that are often manifested as mysterious lights or red balls of fire with a variety of shapes and sizes.

Plasma orbs have a magnetic field as they are an electrically charged gas, and their erratic movements, sudden and instantaneous acceleration are affected by electrical and magnetic fields.

Fireballs form in an aerodynamic vortex generated by the wings and then evolve around the aircraft following magnetic field lines usually located between 100 and 200 meters away from the airframe.

Fireballs can separate from the plane at high speed by being attracted by a more powerful electrostatic field: electrically charged clouds, thermal currents of hot air, thunderstorms or by the radar of another aircraft.

The magnetic field is constantly regenerating due to air friction and fluctuates due to vortices, Fireballs are only the visible part of the phenomenon and have non-ballistic and non-aerodynamic flight characteristics.

They were seen as glowing balls of fire which followed the airplanes but never collided with them. If seen in day light, they appeared to be spinning metallic or crystal transparent balls.

“German secret weapons”-Air-to-air rockets. -Ground-to-air rockets. -Air-to-air missiles.-Ground-to-air missiles.- Catherine Wheels and the Pulkzerstörer concept.-German anti-radar technology.-Coal dust and thermobaric devices.-The mysterious EMP (magnetic wave) weapon.-The sonic weapon.-The solar anti-aircraft mirror.-The atmospheric whirlwind gun.-The vortex gun.

Uh, my modest money is still on 'weather balloons', specifically rapidly rising 'sondes' with flares used to better estimate wind speeds and directions between AAA and bomber stream...

Just needs a couple of guys with theodolites and note-pads, a third team releasing said whatsits. Field-telephone to coordinate, some 3D trigonometry to estimate...

Some tornadoes are known for horizontal vortices.

I am inclined to think that the large numbers of planes and different wingtip designs might allow for some coupling of vortex shedding and standing waves.

Humanity has always been observing inexplicable luminous phenomena. For the Babylonians these were considered zodiacal omens, for the Greeks they were emanations of Phaeton, for the Romans they were lemurs (spirits of the ancestors), for the Mayans they were fire serpents, for the unfortunate Europeans of the Middle Ages they were angels, during the modern age they were described as fairies, in the nineteenth century they were called mirages, during World War II, Foo Fighters, during the Cold War they were Flying Saucers and UFOs during the sixties.

I saw an orange fireball ascending in complete silence at an angle of thirty degrees during the summer of 1970.

We will continue to see strange things even if science manages to reveal their nature.

We shot them, photographed them and filmed them but we never managed to detect them on the radar.

They move at great speed without leaving behind trails or disturbances in the air that we can see, or shock waves that we can hear, they are not material objects.

These things are like the laser light point that I usually play with my cat... it will never catch you.

Maybe someone is playing with us in the same way.

“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

And that is related to the thread topic of Mysterious Lights over the Reich exactly how? But while we're at it, wanna throw in the Marfa Lights as well???

Some peculiar incidents reported by British airmen seem to confirm the existence of these weapons.

The nickname Catherine Wheel appeared in a Flak Liaison Report at the end of July 1943.

Some spin-like projectiles were observed, flying at heights varying between 2,500 and 6,000 meters with an incredibly high rate of climb, throwing off colored incandescent cascades of about 200 meters of diameter.

No aircraft were damaged, so the Allied intelligence services concluded that it was another variant in the enemy’s program of deterrent pyrotechnics. (Consolidated FLO Report Nº.169, July 24-26, 1943, AFHRA).

The bursting effect reported suggested a structural failure due to centrifugal force rather than the explosion of a warhead.

Perhaps these devices were experimental prototypes tested in combat conditions, one of them was observed disintegrating while being followed by several searchlights.

During a mission over Hamburg on the night of 27/28 July 1943, a Halifax Mk. II heavy bomber of No. 77 Sqn (KN) flew through the Catherine Wheel burst of a spin-like rocket projectile. (AIR 27/656/33, Record events, Nº 77 Sqn, July 1943. TNA).

On August 10, 1943, another Halifax of No. 77 Sqn reported a burning object with cascading multi-colored burst falling slowly over Mannheim. (AIR 27/656/35, Record events, Nº 77 Sqn, August 1943. TNA).

Rocket bursting with cascade effect at 25,000 ft. over Kiel. (Data of Unusual Objects & Missiles encountered on Missions, 1943. AFHRA).

These weapons were also described as Phoo Bombs in the document Nº 519.635, 1945 “An Evaluation of German Capabilities in 1945” (Office of the Director of Intelligence. United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe Headquarters).

No, it was related to the previous reply regarding horizontal vortices.....
Wrong crossed answers. I don't really know what those things are. I have consulted a meteorologist from the Spanish air force who has flown inside two hurricanes and according to his opinion and that of some reference books I have consulted, the creation of horizontal tornadoes is mechanically impossible and contrary to Coriolis physics. Although their existence has been observed.

But the mystery is interesting enough to slip away. If there are atmospheric phenomena unknown to science that occur over isolated mountains... perhaps they could explain what happened to Kenneth Arnold near Mount Rainier.

Sometimes the alteration of clouds allows us to visualize the violent nature of atmospheric phenomena.

Between 1942 and 1945, Dr. Ing. Mario Zippermeyer conducted research with a precursor of today's thermobaric explosives to achieve the Pulkzerstorer effect against enemy bomber formations.

-During the summer of 1942, Zippermeyer proposed to OKL one Flak 88 grenade filled with methane and coal dust, under the codename Humus.

It was expected that this mixture was ejected from the rotating shell generating a tubular explosive cloud.

This rotating cloud could be detonated by small explosive charges generating a Pulkzerstörer Wirberling (Formation Destroyer Tornado).

Dust bombs produce a much lower pressure shockwave than conventional explosives, but the duration of pressure is much longer.

Humus project was cancelled in August 1943 because Zippermeyer experienced difficulties in determining the correct proportion of mixture and timing its ignition.

-At the end of 1944, one ethylene fuel-air bomb was developed by Ballistic Institute of Technische Akademie der Luftwaffe. Tests were conducted in the Heereswaffenamt center at Garmisch-Partenkirchen using small, pressurized cylinders filled with gas.

By the end of the war in Europe, German industry had produced 5 ton of fuel-air bombs. (NARA, RG 331, Entry UD-18A, Box 157, Folder 319, 1-1, Reports Evacuation of Targets & Targets Addresses).

-In October 1942, Zippermeyer proposed the construction of the Turbulenz Kanone, a large mortar able to generate artificial tornadoes by detonating a mixture of 60 per cent finely powdered dry brown coal and 40 per cent liquid oxygen.

During the spring of 1943, to test the concept in the Erprobungsstelle Döberitz, a mixture of 8 kg of coal and 1.2 kg of LOX was detonated.

The mixture was contained in a steel vertical tube and a 40-grams explosive charge was used as an igniter.

The Wirbelsturm vortex covered a range of 45 meters high and 35 meters in diameter.

A second test was performed at the Zwölfaxing-Schwechat airfield in August 1943.

This time the steel tube was closed by a hemisphere and contained 50 kg of coal and 7.5 kg of liquid oxygen.

An explosive charge of 250-grams was used for atomizing the mixture, without ignition effect.

The cloud was detonated by means of several time-fuses initiators, simultaneously triggered.

The vortex shockwave covered 600 meters of destructive radius.

On December 16, 1943, six medium bombers Douglas A-20 from 85th BS were attacked over Viterbo-Italy by a white mushroom cloud. The phenomenon was also observed by the pilots of ten escort Spitfires belonging to the Nº 111 Sqn. RAF. (Memo from HQ, XII Bomber Command to Tactical Air Force, January 11, 1944, AFHRA), (AIR 27/869/20 Record of Events, Nº 111 Sqn, December 1943, TNA).

On January 11, 1944, a Bomber Box of B-17 Fs from 384th BG was attacked over Halberstadt by a swirling smoke ball with burning particles like a swarm of bees milling around.

-The Pandora project was an evolution of the Humus concept, it consisted of saturating a volume of space equivalent to that occupied by a ‘Bomber Box’ with thermobaric explosions, creating a fire whirlwind (Feuerwirbel).

Zippermeyer proposed using Volksflak, multiple 88-mm Humus grenades, or Föhn rocket salvos. (“Osterreich II-Die Wiedergeburt unseren Staates” by Hugo Portisch, ISBN 3-218-004225-Vienna).

-The Feuerwirbel concept resumed in early 1945, under the codename Aktion Hexenkessel, with the development of an air-dropped tornado-bomb (Schwere Luftbombe).

The SS Weapons Branch gathered in Skoda-Kauba Flugzeugbau Entwicklung-Cakowitz a research group consisting of experts from Technische Hochschule-Vienna, Rheinmetall-Borsig AG, Dynamit Nobel Corporation and Ballistic Institute-Gatow.

The bomb was intended as an anti-aircraft weapon able to destroy aircraft by excessive turbulence. The possibility that the explosion would consume all the oxygen available in the area, affecting the operation of the engines of the aircraft that had not been destroyed, was also considered.

This superbomb should be dropped from an aircraft flying at 1,000-1,500 meters above the 'Bomber Box', it would descend suspended under a parachute specially designed to rotate the weapon facilitating the dispersion of the explosive cloud.

Ignition would be obtained by means of a barometric fuse and several explosive initiators. A good distribution of these time fuses, activated simultaneously on the periphery of the explosive cloud, would have been necessary.

Several ground tests were conducted on March 8 and February 12, 1945, in Eggenalm and Ohrdurf-Harz.

During these tests, lethal radii of up to 1,200 meters were recorded, using 150 kg of coal, the 250 kg version could be theoretically four times stronger. But it was also shown that artificial tornadoes generated in a vertical mortar did not reach sufficient rotational speed to produce structural damage to a bomber flying at 6,000 meters altitude.

-To enhance the rotation of the incandescent gas, it was decided to use a steel torus called Himmelfeger developed in Heereswaffenamt-Kummersdorf facilities.

At that time all available liquid oxygen was needed for the V-weapons program and the Coal/LOX mixture was replaced by Hydrogen/air to produce a rotating ring of incandescent gases.

The prototype, called Wirbelringkanone, consisted of a 2.5-meter-diameter steel cylinder attached to another 0.75-meter-diameter axial cylinder that should work as a guidance shaft during the ejection of the vortex.

Pressurized Hydrogen was forced into the combustion chamber formed by the circular space between the two cylinders, using a ring of tangential injectors to generate the rotational momentum.

The ignition was electronically regulated.

During the tests performed in the Hillersleben proving ground, shockwaves with a destruction radius of 400-500 meters were generated. The prototype was captured by U.S. troops on April 26, 1945.

Technicians had hoped that a future operational version with a diameter of 30 meters would have devastating effects against Allied bombers.
