In January 1969 Izrael sent to USA one ex-Iranqi AF MiG-21F-13 (black 007) and two ex Syrian AF MiGs-17F (Have Ferry/Have Drill). Have Doughnut MiG-21F-13 (black 80965) was tested from January 1968 to March 1968 ... First USAF's MiG-21F-13 (black 80965) and MiG-21F-13 (black 007) was two different aircraft. What is source of MiG-21F-13 (black 80965)? One source (czech LK magazine) said Indonesia, another source said Izrael (ex Algerian AF MiG-21F-13). What si truth? What is fate of MiG-21F-13 (black 007) and ex-Algerian AF MiGs-21F-13 (Izrael sent to USA 4 or 6? ex-Algerian AF MiGs-21F-13 in late 1967 or in 1968?) in USA?
 
In early 70's USA bought from Indonesia 10 MiG-21F-13 (2151, 2152, 2153, 2155, 2156, 2157, 2159, 2162, 2166 and 2170), 1 MiG-21U (2176) and 2 LiM-5P (1184 and 1187)
 
Interesting story of the USAF target exploitation and observation program in the 1970's. It shows that a large distributed network, known as TAREX, was used to collect all source intelligence on MiGs, analyze, and disseminate information to USAF "Air Teams" that established clandestine observation posts to watch for and photograph new MiGs.

What is source of first USAF's Su-27, which was tested in Nevada i 90's?
 
The US bought two Su-27's from the Ukrainians in 2009. Russia's Pravda reported that the purchase was for the US military in 2009. The aircraft received the FAA designations of N131SU and N132SU. Obviously not the same aircraft spotted in 1995.

Su-27 with American cockpit labeling. The aircraft, purchased by Pride Aviation, Inc., was modified for US operations while retaining its flight performance capabilities, however its weapon systems were removed by the Ukrainians. The aircraft has since been sold to an 'unknown' buyer.

TacAir of Reno received one of them, possibly Blue 32, delivered by Ukrainian An-124.

The MiG-21F-13 (black 80965) used in Project Have Doughnut and MiG-21F-13 (black 007) used in Project Have Glib were one and the same. The airplane spent two years back in Israel between programs. I have heard from some sources that the MiG marked as Black 007 on display at a museum in Israel is not the same airplane.
 
In 1982 the Israelis asked for the Iraqi MiG-21 (Black 007) back to place in their museum, but the US sent them the wrong MiG. Repeated attempts by the Israelis to retrieve the actual aircraft has failed.
 
And source of Have Glib/Idea MiG-17PF? Any info about ex-Algerian AF MiG's-21F-13?
 
The MiG-21 at the Hatzerim Air Base Museum (displayed as 007) is, from what I understand, an Ex-Algerian MiG-21 (not the Iraqi MiG obtained during Operation Diamond). The Israelis received three of the Algerian MiGs when they inadvertently landed at El Arish AB (along with six MiG-17's) after it had been taken over by the Israelis (the during the Six Day War). This MiG-21 (at Hatzerim) was sent to the US for exploitation and mistakenly returned to the Israelis as the Iraqi MiG-21 (Black 007), when asked in 1982 for display in their museum, but the aircraft on display is believed to be one of the Algerian MiG's.

Looking at earlier question: Syrian MiG-17F (Black 1033), which was captured by Israel in 1968, was given to USAF and became White 002 during Project Have Ferry. Syrian MiG-17C (Black 1401) also acquired by Israel in 1968 and sent to USAF became White 55. Both have red stripes on fuselage that the Israelis put on them so that they would be easily identified.

In 1971 an Iraqi pilot had flown a Su-7 into Iran ... it may by same aircraft

In the early 90's I was in Moscow attempting to do some recovery work on old WWII aircraft with an Ex Pat Russian and his Russian partner with close connections to Yeltsin and Gorbachev. Tthey had their pictures on the wall with the both of them standing next to the "Boys" so I guess they were really close. While there I was contacted by a friend that was an Ex Red Arrows pilot with ties to the MOD and to the US Government. I was presented a shopping list for Uncle Sam for the following:


Su27, Su27UB, Mig 29, Mig 29UB, Mig 31, and an SU25. (the SU25 came off the list when we retook Kuwait. There were talks of a YAK 38 as well, but we never got there. The MOD wanted Su27, Su27UB. We were granted permission to purchase Asset (line) aircraft or new from un-builts on he production line by the Russians, and after many trips to Moscow and meeting with the Sukhoi and Mikoyan heads and designers we were ready to secure the aircraft. They were to be flown or transported to the place way n oath of Vegas.


You may recall when Gorbi made the announcement that they were going to sell military assets to foreign governments... that was my program. Alas, it wasn't to be. At the very last meeting the Russians wanted to raise the prices and then the last straw.....the US said we had compromised the program by having open discussions with other entities (the MOD). They knew all along the Brits wanted a couple. I heard from a reliable source that these aircraft were secured a few years later at a much higher price from other resources. Oh well.. there went my fortune and my red Ferrari and my T-28D. Rats....

We were offered a few different A/C...a BISON was one as well as being asked to support the SUKHOI SST project. There were probably ample opportunities for other purchases, but we were focused on the task at hand. We were spending a lot of money just being there and traveling on a moments notice.


We viewed a mock-up of the MIUR Space Station they wanted to offload for 100K if I recall. Things got a bit too serious once when my UK partner was approached by "someone" who wanted us to look for tactical's and to call this special number if we were approached......... Uh uhh.. no play this game! This gets you dead.........


I had a dinner one night with Anatoly Kvochur who wanted us to subsidize an air show team of SU pilots. They presented us with a phone book (remember those) size list of requests from cash, cars, hotels, and ladies. Pass... I told him they needed to sell rides and he said I quote "We are not bus drivers"! Seems they were in later times. I asked him about Belenko and his defection (American partner was kicking my shins) and he said... who was Belenko? I saw a 25 at the Museum (forget name but I have lots of pictures) walking distance to our hotel (Aero Star Conversia) but we never investigated if any were for sale. Should have I suppose. We were also asked to supply the WWII aircraft we were trying to recover to Russian "restorers" but we were a bit nervous on what they could so so we passed. Others picked up the mantel on this one later. To bad we did not stay at it, but there were concerns of many things. It really was the swap meet years....

HAVE LOAN was a MiG-29 exploitation program according to "On Target: Organizing and Executing the Strategic Air Campaign Against Iraq," from the USAF History Office page 173. The MiG-29's in HAVE LOAN came from the Germans at the start of the war.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Col. (ret) Gail Peck of the Red Eagles, and I asked him if he was "aware of any MiG-25 exploitation programs while he was commander of the 4477th." He said that he did not know of any except for Victor Belenko's flight to Japan in 1976, and that he had no direct or indirect involvement with that aircraft.

He told me that much of the memorabilia of the 4477th was stored in a room at the Pentagon after the program was terminated in March of 1988. Unfortunately, the attack at the Pentagon on 9/11 destroyed this room and with it the 4477th's contents. He has been on a personal quest to locate the remaining MiG's, pilots, and personnel from the 4477th in order to preserve its history. He has a new picture book (140 pages) of the Red Eagles, that include photos not seen before. He is supposed to send me one soon. In the mean time, Peck and the other RE's website is available at:
