So after all these years we know that we know nothing new. Or?
- E-721 failed in the PAK FA competition at the beginning of the millennium;
- E-721 was offered to India in the first decade, but failed;
- RSK MiG after it continued conceptual work on the twin-engine fighter using its own resources, not large ones;
- Rostec/UAC offered the UAE a fifth-generation twin-engine fighter project in the second decade, but failed;
- Butowski published articles on the LMFS, including drawings, in the period 2017–2021 and talked about continuing the work;
- “The current conceptual work on the RSK MiG LFMS is a continuation of the LFI lightweight tactical fighter program launched by MiG as early as 1986. The LFI fighter was later refreshed in the form of the E-721 project for the purposes of the PAK FA stealth fighter program.” – Butowski;
- “Е-721 has nothing to do with a current MiG light fighter studies.” – flateric;
- in 2021, an export-oriented strike fighter LTS appears, while MiG, on the contrary, is promoting an air dominance aircraft;
- in 2021, MiG presents a twin-engine PMKI model with fuselage number “49”, based on the 1.44/1.42 design, introduced as a carrier-based fighter;
- in 2021, Russian media published information, citing a source from the military complex, that MiG is working on an airborne fighter “of the size of the MiG-35”, the prototype is to be built in a few years;
- in 2022, MiG’s position in the UAC structure changes, the MiG OKB continues its activities (it is apparently still working on the MiG-UTS project, for example);
- at the end of 2024, the E-721, LMFS, and possibly other current studies remain classified;
- it can be assumed that some MiG's concept is offered abroad and for the Ru Navy.
On the topic:
- UEC is designing a new engine as a successor to the RD-33 in the same weight category.
So:
- OKB MiG continues to work on a tactical twin-engine fighter of the light or medium weight category?
- is there a chance that a prototype will be built?
- could the RuAF also be interested in such aircraft in the future?
