Slovenian company present MAAT All-in-One Trainer

The MAAT trainer is used for simultaneous training of MANPADS operators, aircraft crews (helicopters, airplanes) and MAWS (Missile Approach Warning System) operators, pilots and electronic warfare officers.

MAAT consists of an exact MANPADS replica and a ruggedized laptop, which functions as an Instructor Control Station. Tailored precisely to customers’ needs, the Trainer can be customized to interoperate with any aircraft installed with UV based MAWS and support a multitude of simulated MANPADS missiles. MAAT is transportable, fast to deploy and practical to use.

PERFECT REPLICATION OF REAL MANPADS HANDLING

MAAT ensures unmatched training realism through authentic handling of all MANPADS operational procedures.

SUPPORTS ANY TYPE OF MANPADS

Typically used with replicas of SA-24 and similar or FIM-92 Stinger and other types.

EXCEPTIONAL COST EFFECTIVENESS

Using MAAT, soldiers can perform approximately 100 sustained launches in under 2 hours of training.

ANALYTICS AND REPORTS

Cutting-edge simulation software enables detailed real-time monitoring of MANPADS gunners. Data collected during exercises offers instructors a comprehensive After-Action Review for detailed soldier performance evaluation.

The Man-Portable Aircraft Survivability Trainer (MAST) is a long-range ultraviolet (UV) stimulator capable of testing aircraft electro-optical (EO) sensor suites up to 5 km (3.1 mi). Designed to operate as a pilot training tool, MAST comes equipped with day/night video recording and precision GPS instrumentation for after-action review of simulated engagements.
  • Long Range up to ~5 km (3.1 mi)
  • Integrated Virtual Seeker to Replicate Real-World Engagements
  • Day/Night Video Recording
  • Precision GPS Coordinates (Azimuth and Degree-from-Horizontal During Launch Sequence)
  • Long Battery Life (~8 hrs per Charge)
  • Provides after-action video to pilot crews
  • Is Capable of Replicating the Visual Effects of an Infrared (IR) Threat-Based Weapon
  • Cost-effective Stimulation of UV-based Aircraft Survivability Equipment Systems for Realistic Aircrew Training Events
MAST can simulate missile warning systems utilized by the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and allied forces. The optical simulator incorporates a light-emitting diode (LED) array for accurate stimulation and effective nighttime use. Its integrated virtual seeker replicates the difficulty of acquiring and launching a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS).

Leonardo Joint Man-Portable Air Defense System

The Leonardo DRS Joint Man-Portable Air Defense System (JMANPADS) Trainer is a field proven, man-portable, fully integrated lightweight Electronic Warfare (EW) trainer for enhancing rotary and fixed wing aircrew combat proficiency while countering today’s lethal Infrared (IR) Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS). Easy to use with minimal maintenance or operator training required, JMANPADS cost-effectively meets the unique operational training and After Action Review (AAR) requirements for unit-level aircrew survivability training. JMANPADS’s Ultra-Violet (UV) threat signature technology has been successfully demonstrated in multiple open-air field demonstrations and formal testing against fixed and rotary wing aircraft equipped with a variety of missile warning systems including the AAR-47 (multiple variants) and the AAR-57 Common Missile Warning System (CMWS).

The JMANPADS Trainer includes a high-intensity programmable UV threat signature source, modular day/night capable sensors, a passive eye-safe Electro-Optic Range Finder (EORF), a digital video recording capability, an internal battery pack and easy to use operator controls and displays - all housed in a single untethered lightweight rugged assembly comparable in weight to common MANPADS systems such as the SA-7, SA-14, SA-16, and SA-18. The modular sensor packages and optional capabilities provide the ability to tailor the system performance capabilities to the unique requirements of individual training ranges and scenarios - both day and night.

A fully integrated PC-based AAR with annotated digital video (LAT/LONG, GPS Time, Firing Status) provides an affordable and easy-to-use method for debriefing aircrews on any PC. Training missions are recorded directly on the JMANPADS Trainer on an internal rugged/removable hard drive and can be transferred to external PCs either via a Local Area Network (LAN) or USB based drives. The Leonardo DRS JMANPADS Trainer rounds out the EW product line of realistic Radio Frequency (RF) and Electro-Optical (EO) aircrew survivability equipment trainers.

Military pilots are testing their mettle at Red Flag 16-3 at Nellis AFB, Nev., July 11 to 29 in the Air Force’s premier air-to-air combat training exercise with approximately 100 aircraft and 3,500 participants from 40 U.S. military units, according to a Red Flag press release.

During the exercise Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines will go up against the most sophisticated enemy aircraft, cyber threats and air defense systems. One of the threats is the man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS), a shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile (SAM) which is operated by three Office of the Secretary of Defense civilians from the Center for Countermeasures (CCM) at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

The MANPADS team travels to various locations throughout the 2.9 million-acre Nevada Test and Training Range, and can be set up to fire within 20 minutes. The team’s MANPADS set up allows them the capability to simulate threat missile “lock on” of the aircraft. Once the “lock on” occurs, the system triggers an aircraft’s missile warning system by employing the Mallina stimulator to emulate the signature of a SAM.

The operation is executed by a three-person team. One person shoots the MANPADS, one person records each engagement on a laptop and one person operates the Mallina stimulator. The aircraft can automatically or manually fire flares so that the heat-seeking missile will follow the flares instead of the aircraft. It is now up to the pilot to use tactics to either find the threat or leave the hostile area.

“Red Flag uses MANPADS because it is the most prolific SAM threat aircrew can encounter,” said Maj. Christopher Bulla, Red Flag team chief. “This technology can be found in just about any country around the world. It is a realistic threat that aircrew need to be ready to encounter.”

Tony Rankins, program manager for the Warfighter Integration Office at CCM, said his three-person team will fire over 100 shots during the three-week exercise. All of the shots are recorded with audible video which is available in debriefs his team will give feedback and training to aircrew on MANPADS’ engagement capabilities and limiting factors.

“The more aircrew know about the characteristics of MANPADS, the better suited they are to stay alive while in hostile territory,” said Rankins who has more than 28 years of active duty and civilian experience with MANPADS.

Although MANPADS are used as a threat-based scenario for all types of aircraft, they are typically a threat to low-flying helicopters and tactical aircraft, said Rankins.
