Hi,

the Lockheed L-1449 was a redesigned version of Super Constellation
but had a block speed 70 mph faster than any aircraft of 1955.,it had
a new thin wing and powered by four P&W PT2 turboprops,many
other alternative engines was available.

The XW2V-1 was a planned radar version of the WV-2 with the Starliner's wings for the US Navy. It would have included four Allison T56-A8 engines and missiles for protection against attackers. Considerably different than its predecessors, given the production designation Lockheed L-084.

versions were planned for Pan Am, but none were ever produced.
L-249 Company designation for the XB-30 bomber. Project cancelled in favor of the Boeing B-29.
L-349 Company designation for the C-69B. None built.
L-449 Unknown proposed civilian airliner version.
L-549 Company designation for the C-69C. One built.
L-849 Planned version of the L-749, which would have had Wright R-3350 TurboCompounds.
L-949 Speedfreighter combi version of the L-849 with an 18 ft 4in fuselage stretch.
L-1149 A planned Allision turboprop version of the L-1049G and L-1049H.
L-1449 as the old post.
L-1549 unbuilt project to stretch L-1449, 95 in (240 cm).

Here is the rest of Constellation projects;


C-69A was a troop transport with a different internal layout than C-69.


C-69D was a VIP transport version,with different engines,also with different
extra oil and fuel tanks.


L-749B proposed a turboprop version.


L-1049J was a version of L-1049H/02 with lengthened wingspan and an extra
fuel tank.


L-1249B was an airliner version,based on L-1249A,with L-1049E based fuselage
and P&W PT2F-1 turboprops.

A great what if in civil air transport was 1946 Bristol/L-049 licence.


L-049 stimulated Brabazon Type III Empire, which was firstly Interim, bomber-variant Avro Tudor and HP Hermes, which were known to be too heavy to be competitive. But UK had a Unique Selling Propositionpropellor-) turbines! Many schemes ended up as Bristol T.175 Britannia with Proteus. But onway, 1944-47, Avro, HP and Vickers-Armstrongs offered lures that Bristol Aeroplane could not match, diverted onto L-89 (XR6O-1) Constitution-sized T.167 Brabazon I. From 13/7/46 BOAC operated 5 L-049 from Bristol/Whitchurch, maintained by BOAC Engineering/Filton. Many more were wanted but UK had no $.

To defeat new Type III schemes, Bristol pitched licence-built Centaurus/ Constellation, to be followed by Theseus/Constellation. By early 1947 notions of a Medium Bomber were gaining traction. Clearly Avro and HP would be contenders, maybe V-A too. MoS saw benefit in keeping the Big Bomber firms free to do a Big Bomber, and putting BOAC's Empire into Bristol. It helped that the MP for Bristol E. was the President of the Board of Trade, who therefore supported a bid to Treasury for $. Cabinet rejected this on 22/4/47. Consolation came to Bristol, after Mediums were awarded to everybody-but-Bristol, as T.175, initially Centaurus, then Proteus.


A Theseus/L-749B in Service 1951-ish, no doubt followed by a Proteus/L-1049...Wow!

It seems that there is much confusion about 1249/1249A and 1249B.
Most serious -printed- sources do not use the prefix ' L ' in relation to the Model 49 evolution.

Lockheed CL-257 (USN W2V-1) late-1956 factory model, based on the L-1649 Starliner, but with turboprops and wingtip jets. This last Constellation also lost its signature triple fin (although the XW2V-1 still had it.)

As I mentioned above, the Lockheed CL-257 / W2V-1 proposal was initially equipped with three verticals. Wind tunnel tests determined the center fin performance was negatively affected by the radar pylon ahead of it, and it was eliminated. The empennage was then enlarged and extensively reconfigured with all-metal, twin verticals. Here is a factory model of the W2V-1 with the original L-1649 Starliner tail configuration.

This group of Lockheed factory models covers most of the AEW Constellation's 7-year evolution. Counter-clockwise, from right:

Lockheed PO-1W (2 built): modified L-749A Constellation airliners, 1949
Lockheed WV-2 (142 built): modified L-1049 Super Constellation airliners, 1953
Lockheed WV-2E (1 built): modified EC-121K Warning Star, 1955
Lockheed W2V-1 (none built): L-084 / highly modified L-1649 Starliner, 1956

Notes about the models:

The PO-1W is a very early design, not yet equipped with the lengthened-nose weather radar.
The WV-2E (EC-121L) has an unknown dorsal blister ahead of the rotodome. I do not believe the -2E was ever equipped with this.

Ok gents, just thought Id let you know that I've just sent off an email to Lockheed Martin in the attempt...the hope that I can get more information on the Lockheed CL-410-10/15 ALRI design proposal pitched to both the USN and USAF in what looks like 1959.

Fingers crossed they show some favour to this request, and Ill naturally post anything (if anything) I get in response!
