Italian Leonardo tries to convince Spain to choose its M-346 Advanced Jet Trainer Aircraft over the Turkish Aerospace’s Hürjet according to InfoDefensa.
On December 20, the Spanish Ministry of Defense announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Turkish Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB) to develop an “advanced training system” for student fighter pilots of the Spanish Air and Space Forces. Spain’s choice is based on the Hürjet trainer aircraft, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries TUSAŞ. This agreement with Türkiye a brings the arrival of the Hürjet closer.
Madrid wants to replace the F-5M Tigers currently used for the operational transition of its aspiring pilots at Wing 23 of the Talavera la Real air base.
Howoever, InfoDefensa reported that a delegation from the Italian group had recently travelled to Madrid to defend the candidacy of its aircraft to General Francisco Braco, the Chief of Staff of the Air and Space Forces.
According to former press reports, Spanish Air and Space Forces commander Braco met with national press. This meeting took place before declaring the decision with Turkish Hürjet. “We are going to acquire a trainer, but what returns do we get? That is the point of the negotiation," he explained.
The Ministry of Defence and the Air and Space Force does not want to acquire an aircraft through a "lease" where there is a high dependence on the manufacturer for maintenance or updating of components. "The objective is to have our own aircraft that we can touch," Braco stressed and added “The Hürjet is well positioned, I do not deny it, but with conditions, and those are the conditions we are in right now.”
