By 1995 the JASDF was looking at a Mitsubishi T-2 Replacement to enter service around 2002 under the AT-X programme.
Kawasaki studied an improved variant of the T-4 to meet the AT-X requirements.
Mitsubishi studied the TFS-X based on the two-seat conversion trainer variant of the FS-X with a different (cheaper) equipment fit. The JDA preferred the TFS-X and planned to buy around 60 TFS-X and F-2Bs with surplus F-15DJs making up the rest of the AT-X requirement in terms of numbers. In the event the AT-X programme never went any further.
Details on both studies are sketchy.
