Indiana Jones 5

I agree that the Indiana Jones franchise needs to end at some point without needlessly wringing every single drop from it. But I believe that Indy and Marion deserve an ending where they find closure for losing their son Mutt.
Easily resolved with a five-minute short. Indy, circa 1969, wakes up from a nap before a press conference for a major archeological discovery (say, Atlantis), and it transpires that DoD was simply a nightmare. His son and grandchildren are there with him, along with his beloved wife Marion, to help him celebrate his wildly successful and popular career. Because nobody wants Miserable Indy.

Simple.

Look at the National Treasure TV show without Nic Cage- pretty average and it suffered for it.

I loved those movies (especially the first) and was unaware there was a TV series. So I looked it up on Wikipedia to see if it might be worth looking up...

Nope. I'm out.

Only dirty socialists and filthy fascists (but then, I basically repeat myself) want to ban *negative* reviews.
In my opinion, the rift is between authoritarian and democratic thinkers.
What did Willem Drees do to be lumped with fascists?

I recognize that Dial of Destiny had numerous flaws and I understand why you do not like the film. I have mixed feelings about Dial of Destiny and I do agree that the film pales in comparison to the classic trilogy and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I agree that Dial of Destiny should have been done better and Indy and Marion deserve a more fulfilling ending.

But dismissing and pretending that Dial of Destiny should not exist does not change what is already done and Indy and Marion deserve better than that. For better or worse, Dial of Destiny and the fans who actually enjoyed it are part of the franchise and we should not ignore and trivialize them. We should move on to what could happen next for Indy, Marion, and their companions beyond the five-film series.

I admire and respect your work as an engineer and historian for AEROSPACE PROJECTS REVIEW and your contributions to SECRET PROJECTS FORUM and ATOMIC ROCKETS. Even though we could disagree on many things on this thread, I know we both share a passion for knowledge and I could learn a lot from you and your fellow members on this forum.

Can we both agree that Indy and Marion's reunion and reconciliation at the end is one of the few good things of Dial of Destiny? Maybe we can both imagine Indy and Marion finding their happy endings together some years after the events of Dial of Destiny?

Terminator 2 fans were ignored and trivialized when Terminator: Dark Fate came along and trashed *that* movie. Heck, T:DF ignored T3, TS and T:G. so if the Terminator franchise can come along delete prior movies from existence, then a future Indy project can similarly ignore DoD or retcon it as a nightmare of a man who has led a long and successful - but filled with trauma - life.

No, because I haven't seen it. Disney *anti-sold* that movie to me. Before it came out, everything Disney put out about ti seemed not just wrong, but unpleasant and unappealing. After it came out, every review I read that spoiled plot point made it seem even more unpleasant and unappealing.

It starts off OK but gets a bit samey with her ability to just look at something and magic an answer to whatever that thing is out of thin air.

I love them too and I'd like for them to do a third if they can find a great story.

As of Dial of Destiny (2023), these are all the countries that Indy had visited throughout the five films:
Map of Locations in Indiana Jones.png
Red= Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981); Purple = Temple of Doom (1984); Blue = Last Crusade (1989); Gold = Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008); Green = Dial of Destiny (2023)

In additions, these are all the locations that Indy visited throughout The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992-1993):

With Harrison Ford already announced that he has retired from the role of Indiana Jones, Dial of Destiny is the last of Indy's on-screen adventures. Nevertheless, there is the possibility of post-Dial of Destiny spin-off stories (e.g. novels, games, etc.) featuring Indy's companions such as Short Round and Helena Shaw continuing his work around the world.

Where would you like a post-Dial of Destiny spin-off story to explore or revisit next?

Personally, I would love a Helena Shaw spin-off story set in Thailand and Cambodia during the Cambodian-Vietnamese War of the late 1970s where Helena discovers Indy and Marion's long-lost grandchild who is the half-Vietnamese Amerasian offspring (bụi đời) of their deceased or missing son Mutt and has been living as a war orphan and refugee since the end of the Vietnam War.

The inspiration for the McGuffin/plot device (literally)/machina ex machina.

We all remember this famous line by Indy to Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984):

Fortune and Glory would be a great title for a post-Dial of Destiny spin-off story.

Someone remind me: After Indy and Mutt got captured by the Russians and then reunited with Marion, did we ever see Mutt's switchblade for the rest of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
Mutt Williams' Knife.jpg

My theory is Mutt brought his switchblade with him to Vietnam until his death or disappearance in the war.

In my envisioned post-Dial of Destiny spin-off story set in Thailand during the late 1970s where Helena discovers Indy and Marion's long-lost grandchild who has been living as a war orphan and refugee, Mutt's kid kept his knife as a memento of their father whom they never got to meet.

If a major movie franchise ever comes down to the fate of a single regular switchblade size artifact, I'm willing to call time of death.

It's just a small continuity nod, not a major plot point. Kingdom of the Crystal and Dial of Destiny had numerous small references to the classic Indiana Jones trilogy.

Everyone on this thread can be passionate about their favorite stories. We can imagine and share these stories openly with others without being judged for how we feel.
Anyone can judge. Anyone can *be* judged.

But the point is you keep raising this same exact fanfic plot point over and over. We get it.

I liked # 1, 3, and 5, but I hated #4 (as I do #2 - looks like there may be a numerical pattern here?) But go on...

I didn't hate 2 but Spielberg's screaming wife every second scene wasn't helpful.
I liked Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Last Crusade, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I place Temple of Doom in the lower tier, but I don't hate it. As I have mentioned earlier, I have very mixed feelings about Dial of Destiny.

I must also say that Dial of Destiny disappointed me in certain aspects.
Seeing Indian even older than he was in Crystal Skull is a little disappointing.

I would be happier with Dial of Destiny if there is a post-Dial of Destiny spin-off story in the future (e.g. novel, television, game, etc.) where Indy and Marion discover their long-lost grandchild who is the offspring of their deceased or missing son Mutt and their family becomes whole again.

Is anyone familiar with the Indiana Jones forum The Raven on http://raven.theraider.net/? I have been debating on registering and joining The Raven, especially before the upcoming one-year anniversary of Dial of Destiny. I am uncertain as to the The Raven's quality as an Indiana Jones forum or the practicality of being a member of more than one Internet forum.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the U.S. theatrical release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny on June 30, 2023.

Do you think Dial of Destiny is the last we see of Indiana Jones, or do you believe we will see more Expanded Universe spin-off stories in the future (e.g. novels, TV, games, etc.)?

Your reply is fiction. A detailed study of the assassination of President Kennedy shows the accuracy of the events depicted in the movie JFK.
Except for how the trees grew up to block the line of sight...

Personally, the idea that would appeal most to me would be a series set in the golden age of Indiana Jones in my opinion : the 1930s. But I doubt it will happen.
I'd love that.

And do we really care ? ;)

Apologies that sounded harsher than intended, J
No offense taken. ;)

Apparently, people still care enough to be excited about the upcoming Windows and Xbox game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle with Troy Baker voicing Indy:

Great Circle is an example of how even after Harrison Ford has announced his retirement from the role after Dial of Destiny, Indiana Jones could continue with spin-off stories as told through games, novels, TV, and other Expanded Universe media.

Today marks the ten-year anniversary of the United States theatrical release of the World War II tank film Fury on October 17, 2014.

Shia LaBeouf was phenomenal in his role as gunner Boyd “Bible” Swan. This scene in Fury is a testament towards how much his acting has developed since portraying Mutt Williams:

Here, co-star Jon Bernthal (Grady “Coon-Ass” Travis) explains how serious Shia took his role and how Jon was won over by his dedication:

Shia LaBeouf would have been perfect portraying an older, hardened, reflective Mutt Williams in Vietnam.

Today marks the public opening of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on November 13, 1982. I imagine that Indy, Marion, and their grandchild [Mutt's kid] would visit the Memorial Wall where Mutt's name has been engraved alongside his fallen brothers-in-arms.
