'Hypothetical' is fun and inspiring. 'Fake' is often criminal. I'm not sure if documenting the latter in its worst sense is the intent of this thread, but rather than start a new thread, here's a detailed exercise in caveat emptor. Individual points may be dated or wrong, but the preponderance of evidence is in favour of a guilty verdict.

I'm rather interested in the psychology of con artists - some are just unashamed frauds but some seem to start as dreamers who begin with 'fake it until you make it' in the almost sincere belief that they have a chance of making it and then devolve into pure grifters.

Commercial space, like on-demand vtol is full of start-ups, all on the spectrum from undercapitalised though poorly thought out to outright scams. Usually, if they don't start at the last, they start to drift there.

Anyway, an honest hypothetical design. Here are various representations of the Mars spaceship in Stephen Baxter's Voyage.

In Baxter's scenario, it's a chemical-driven ship based on Apollo technology after a failed attempt at the giant NERVA-based system we know from the 70s.

That brings a tear to my eye.

Strange that we actually could have been on Mars already if we HADN’T invested in a tiled monstrosity—killing a perfectly serviceable HLLV. We’d never repeat that mistake…right?

Allow me to demonstrate the difference:

The *Hypothetical spacecraft* are the two in the middle here:
View: https://x.com/brickmack/status/1508515796116549641?lang=bg&mx=2

The *fake* is the one on the…far right

I had to take the shot—it was too easy. ;)

wrong.
A. Saturn V was too expensive to continue to use
b. We were never going to go to Mars, much less use the Saturn V to do it.
b2. Saturn V was on the outs before Shuttle came along
c. The choice was shuttle or nothing. There is nothing that says we would have gone to Mars if there was no Shuttle
d. The shuttle was not a monstrosity (that was Buran) and the shuttle did more good than the alternatives
e. Not saying that the shuttle couldn't have been designed better (smaller) and getting rid of all ELVs was good decision. There is some middle ground.

I still hope to live to see the first human landing on Mars, and I regret to say that my best bet at this moment is on a lunatic named Musk.
I've been waiting for that since 1973, but I don't think it's going to happen with today's technology. Mars is “old fashion”, as is Yeager's attempt to break an altitude record when Mercury astronauts were already training.
