Forum Upgrade planned - Early Jan 2025 - New Artwork? New Colours? Feedback.

Stupid question I know—but what kind of plane did you use in the header before?

Hi Paul

I'm working on a forum upgrade. Test upgrade was successfully completed, so pencilling in 4th Jan for upgrading the forum.

Not really subject of your questions, but one problem I'm having with forum ergonomics is that the indication that you're not at the end of a thread but only at the end of a page is very low-key.

That regularly leads to me not reading the latest post in watched threads, which (I believe) results in the thread dropping off my radar entirely because if I haven't read that last post, any more new posts in the same thread won't trigger notifications any more.

But even without that follow-up problem, it's sort of annoying how easily the "Next >" at the bottom of the page can be missed. Maybe there's a way to make this more visible in the new forum layout?

Henning (HoHun)

Late to the party, as usual. I am happy with where we are frankly. However adapting to entice more aviation afficionado to the ranks is always good.

Hi Paul,

These are the page buttons. How would you change this to be more obvious?

Ideally, centered horizontally at the bottom edge of the screen and floating overlaid in red when you scroll to the bottom, analog to the floating scroll-to-top/scroll-to-bottom buttons that come up when you use the mouse wheel.

Alternatively, a clear signifier that one has reached the last post would probably help too, making changes to the page navigation unnecessary.

Or the notification about new posts not being reset when I don't browse to the last post in a thread. I believe technically, the forum tracks the highest number of a thread I view, as I can use this to manage my reading of old threads, but it doesn't usefully apply this tracking to the notification reset.

Hi Michel,

so much i like that Next bottom
I hit direct on number page to get my destination.

That's not really connected to the issue I'm having.

My problem really is that I need a clear indication that there are still new messages in a thread beyond the page I've already read, which will cause the notifications about this thread to dry out if I don't read them because I don't notice the little "next" button that's basically doing overtime filling in for the non-existing "Unread messages remaining" signifier.

That's easy to overlook exactly because whenever you're browsing deliberately, the existing buttons are just fine. (Well, I'd like to have another set at the top of the page, but that's just a luxury. I sometimes work my way back in a thread, starting with a post I've found via the search engine ...)

Henning (HoHun)

Sorry, we are due an update on the update.

I just need a weekend with some time to dedicate, and some personal and work challenges have intervened. I injured my leg in an ebike/car collision and some other things,

I might do a basic upgrade first and the restructuring separately so its not as big of a piece of work.
