Flight archive going online (and offline)

Just in case, I've all archive downloaded, all 176Gb of it.
Hi man, sorry for bothering you, but would you perhaps have the "Flight - 30 October 1953" ? It has a specific article about ABS and I also need the number/volume of said magazine. Again, sorry for bothering you, and thanks

Can anyone help?

Are those 176 GB of original PDFs from Flight Global pages? I tackled with it couple of years ago and I thought it would take couple of TB to get it all (it was over 230 000 pages/files) - so I have only written a simple script to extract all the OCR'ed texts and stored it in a TXT files. Then with simple linux commands I am able to look for a specific keywords as it was through the online search. So if anyone needs it, can share it. (550 MB compressed).

Flateric, can you share your PDFs?

By any case you could arrange to share it?
I'm looking for several issues from '60s, '70s and '80s.

My dear Schneiderman,

I download many issues, ask me if you need, maybe it is in my collection.
Honestly - I'd happily take everything you got. ;)

flateric and hesham - if you read it, please get in touch, I can arrange for a data transfer (it's a huge archive, so I'd be happy to even buy a hard drive and pay for postage if you don't feel like uploading over a hundred gigabytes).

If anyone's curious:

If you happen to run into infomation on the Ford Areo Engine (Ford V12 Ford GAB) I would be interested. I know there should be an article from 1940. And I have the blurb on it from August 21st 1941. I really wish their archive was back up, it was such a gold mine.

I have access to the magazines from 1940 and there's nothing there about ford's own engines (other than the fact that some planes used them), and nothing regarding V12 or Ford Aero. The only content about Ford's engines is about them building the Pratt and Whitney's engines.

Thanks, must have miss remebered the year, its been a hot while since I had used the Flight search function to try to find info. I'll find it at some point. Thanks again.
(I'll get my own files from the British Army Staff Antiaircraft Liaison Letter's uploaded at some point. Not really a complete set sadly but an interesting read.)

I think You were close. I did use my search script over extracted texts and found two short ones and one longer (page and a half), all in 1941. If you are still after it, I may somehow provide you with extract.

Its ok. I managed to get a copy of 41. Which will go a long way to the project. Writing up the various WW2 era US tank engines.

The more I dig in the more messy it becomes. The odd thing is for a aircraft engine of 1940/41 turned tank engine (GAA V8) turned big tank engine (GAC back to V12) Ford seems to have a lot of problems. And development support for the V12 always seems back burner as even by August of 45 there is only 14 pilot engines. In early 43 there were 5 GAAs running on test stands 24/7. And another 14-17 running in vehicles in different climates.

If anyone's curious:
Unlike the Aviation Week archive, the Flight Archive was pretty incomplete, and was (poorly) digitised as just consecutive pages, not issues.

Yeah I remember browsing through it and banging my head against walls as result (metaphorically, of course)

Removed links to a website offering magazine downloads. This site contains pirated copies of current magazines, and is not something we can link to or promote here.

Would I be able to request an issue? I'm trying to find primary sources for research about PBY Catilinas that were turned into flying yachts and I heard a July issue of FLIGHT magazine has some info!

"Flight magazine on 24 July 1953, will shed some light on the thinking behind the Landseaire’s development. Allward’s article, entitled Airborne Yachts—Luxury Conversions of Wartime Catalinas, "

So yeah if you had 24 July 1953 I'd be most grateful! Unfortunately I don't have the page number. Such a shame the archve still isn't back

How practical would it be to set up a searchable repository of the old Flight archive? We have the PDF collection, a searchable text database, and some folks (running this site) with experience of setting up search engines.
Resources should not be burdensome; a single host with a 1TB consumer hard drive would be adequate, whether dedicated or hired.
If approached cooperatively, Flight might well prove amenable to having their setup costs reduced, even kudos points gained by sticking their brand on it for free, in return for granting a license.
Or are there showstoppers lurking in there somewhere, such as who pays the running costs?

The publisher might take a dim view of that... But since they appear to be doing nothing with it and someone else would be doing the donkey work, they might just be amenable for a fee.

As we say around here..

More a case of us waiving our fee to help them get their archive back up again. Don't think like a victim, think like a leader.

Ever listened to Ed Readon's Week?
Kinda formed my view of publishers.

More likely to form my view of Ed Readon.

Don't forget we have quite a few publishers among our membership here. I have gained the distinct impression that not all of them are the spawn of Satan.

You're talking about a company charging £230 annual subscription fees for digital content here.... back in 2020 the subscription was £163.80, inflation is high but not that high! I don't think we can deny they are in it for the money.

We don't even know if DWW Media Group has the legal copyright for all the archive material, it's a big assumption.

It's a topic that has been brought up from time to time at Air Britain - why not scan the stash we have/use the PDF stash we nicked as a quick and easy solution. The answer is always the same, it would cost a lot of money and nobody has asked whether DWW is interested enough to sell. Air Britain has been in contact with them but no sense that Flight were biting their hand off to be rid of a bunch of PDFs or musty magazines (assuming they still exist) or would condone other organisations openly using pirated copies on their behalf.

Hey, I know this is a longshot, but I'm kinda desperate, is there any chance I can get copies for May 23, May 30 and June 6 1940?
I would be extremely appreciative. Thank you either way.
Cheers!

Hi,
Would it be possible to get access to Flight 1945, page 550?, I'm an aerospace engineering student doing research on the Napier Sabre VA, it would be very helpful.
Thanks a lot
