Interesting 1936 patent for swing-wing variable geometry through hinged wings, due to one Walter Everts.
The description explicitly links the wing-swinging to improving high-speed performance thus:
“An important object of the invention is to provide means to angularly adjust the sustaining planes or wings with respect to the fuselage, so that the speed of the aeroplane may be increased.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for angularly adjusting the sustaining planes or Wings with respect to the fuselage without disturbing the center of gravity of the aero plane.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the folding sustaining planes or wings of the aeroplane, which means folds in action, approaching the stream line shape of the fuselage, thereby offering the minimum air resistance, during the flight of the aeroplane at high speed.”
