How many Ariane 5s does Arianespace have left after the launch of JUICE in April?
I think it’s still the last but I am not 100 percent on that now.

I think it’s still the last but I am not 100 percent on that now.

So by all means it could be the last Ariane 5, I wish that the problems surrounding Ariane 6 could be solved as I currently think that Arianespace is going to have a shortage of launches for potential customers until it arrives.

[1/2] What better way to start the day, than with a little #JUICE?
Yesterday, the JUICE payload arrived in French Guiana and went straight away to @EuropeSpacePort where it will meet our #Ariane5.

Ariane 5 rocket decorated with winning Juice artwork

Two years ago, children from all over the world were invited to create a piece of art inspired by ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice). Last week, a dream came true for nine-year-old Yaryna as her winning artwork was pasted onto the nose of the mighty Ariane 5 rocket that will carry Juice into space next month.

“The drawing was selected out of more than 2600 entries from 63 different countries,” says Monica Talevi, head of ESA’s Education programme. “This astonishing number shows how much the very young generation can be excited and inspired by space and science. These children are our future... if life is one day discovered on one of Jupiter’s icy moons, it will be them who discover it! This is why offering inspirational learning through this competition and many more initiatives is so important for us.”

The ‘Juice Up Your Rocket’ competition gave the scientists and engineers working on Juice the opportunity to discover how the mission is seen through the eyes of children. The winning artwork is now the logo of the mission.

Juice engineer Manuela Baroni explains why they chose this particular artwork: “It is so cute, cheerful and genuine. It contains the main elements of the mission – Jupiter, the icy moons, and Juice itself, but we love that it also contains Earth, highlighting the huge amount of effort that we are all putting in. We also chose it because of the clear lines and colours that would show up well at the top of the rocket. We can now see that it was definitely the right choice.”

The artwork will be clearly visible as Juice launches into space on 13 April from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. This launch kicks off an eight-year journey to the giant gas planet and its three large ocean-bearing moons – Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. The spacecraft will explore Jupiter’s stormy atmosphere and giant magnetic field, and discover the secrets hiding in the moons’ icy oceans.

“Many children dream of being explorers when they grow up, and what a fantastic explorer Juice will be,” concludes Manuela.

Look at this beauty!

Let’s wait and see if the weather improves for tomorrow and that there are no more thunderstorms at the launch site. I was looking forward to the launch today, thrust the weather to spoil it.

Just monitoring the ESA Web TV site and the weather is cloudy and windy at the pad Flyaway, fingers and toes crossed it lifts off today.

Successful launch of Juice, Go Juice. The boosters and fairing have successfully separated, just waiting until the separation of Juice from the Ariane 5.

Give it time Flyaway, I am sure that Juice will get into contact soon.

Finally AOS and also Solar Array deployment, well done Juice. I cannot wait until it arrives at Jupiter, though it is going to be a long wait. Next stop two flybys of the Earth.

The magnetometer boom (J-MAG) recorded the change in magnetic field as it deployed. J-MAG will help characterise Jupiter & Ganymede's magnetic fields, and the moons' oceans.

Good to see that the J-MAG magnetometer is in fully working order.

Every day the RIME antenna shows more signs of movement, visible in images from the Juice Monitoring Camera.
Now partially extended but still stowed away, the radar is roughly a third of its full intended length.

With two months of planned commissioning remaining, there is plenty of time for teams to get to the bottom of the RIME deployment issue and continue work on the rest of the powerful suite of instruments on their way to investigate the outer Solar System.

Various options are still available to nudge the important instrument out of its current position; from an upcoming engine burn️ to shake the spacecraft and then rotating #ESAJuice to move the radar out of the shadows to warm things up

An issue has occurred with the deployment sequence for JUICE.

#ESAJuice deployment status update: our 16 m-long ice-penetrating RIME antenna is not yet fully deployed as planned. Work is ongoing to resolve an issue currently preventing it from being released from its mounting bracket.

The above GIF shows Juice’s stuck but moving RIME antenna, captured by the Juice Monitoring Camera on board the spacecraft. This animation shows the radar’s movements in five photos taken across 17–21 April, as teams on Earth work through steps in Juice’s deployment.

Next steps include an engine burn to shake the spacecraft and a series of rotations that will turn #ESAJuice, warming up the mount and antenna which are currently in cold shadows.

Juice is otherwise performing excellently and with two months of planned commissioning, there is plenty of time to work on any issues. More updates when we have them. #StayTuned RIME antenna awaiting deployment on 14 April 2023

Not looking good for Juice's main antenna fingers crossed that Mission Control can get the issue sorted.

More good news from #ESAJuice instrument teams: the Moons And Jupiter Imaging Spectrometer (MAJIS) has completed its post-launch check-out!

It will study the surface composition & exosphere of the icy moons and characterise the composition & dynamics of Jupiter’s atmosphere

The MAJIS scan mirror and shutter were flawlessly activated and operated in space.
Observations of its internal calibration sources confirm the performance of the instrument is aligned with pre-flight measurements
https://esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2022/12/Juice_s_science_instruments

Here’s the proof!

‖Greyscale image: top = pre-flight calibration image, bottom = in-flight commissioning.
Plot: Signal profile from the two images
More details by the MAJIS team http://inaf.it/en/inaf-news/juice-majis-commissioning
Two greyscale images outputting vertical bands of white/grey/black colours: A plot showing signal from the two greyscale images with green and red lines almost exactly superposed on top of each other showing the in-flight data is almost identical to the ground calibration data

MAJIS was built by a French-Italian consortium led by @IASorsay with @CNES
& @ASI_spazio with contributions from @mediainaf, @Leonardo_IT & @belspo

#ESAJuice is part of a large international endeavour https://esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2023/03/Juice_an_international_endeavour
