Crash of Embraer 190, Flight J2 8243 (Azerbaijan airlines)

This was the script to a 80's Schwarzenegger movie where there's goodies and baddies, and the baddies do bad things just for the lulz cause that's what baddies do

The idea was I suspect to have it crash in the Caspian Sea to make it much more difficult to investigate the wreckage also the Russians apparently tried to get access to the E190's blackboxes but failed to do so.

anyone aware of new russian surface-to-air missiles capable of launching flocks of birds?

Though, In all seriousness, I assume the offender was either a smaller missile that missed slightly, or a larger missile which missed by a large margin.

This idea doesn't make any sense. The Caspian is well known by everyone around and the flight path largely went over the shallow part of the lake, precipitating a hunt for blackbox in the caspian, not that machievellian for Putler. Then about the blackbox, so we barely learned about this crash but we surely know the Russians tried to get the blackbox within couple of hours of after alleged potential SAM fire without knowing where the plane will fall if it falls at all which happens to be kazalhstan a foreign country, on top of that the theory is if they will get the blackbox and not let others see it thus telegraphing to everyone that they did it, and end up looking evil.

It's a war zone s**t happens, it's unfortunate but not premeditated if in fact it's due to Russian sam, it is definitely possible but so are many other possibilities. But more importantly, one way or another whoever's fault it is, this will be the latest in a long line of "muh ebil RuZZia" narrative decontectualized from events to be forgotten in a month only to be remembered as a talking point by well rounded columnists on Times and CNN

That the flight crew was able to land well enough to have any survivors is flat out miraculous.

It is amazing and as I mentioned upthread it reminds me strongly of the 1989 Sioux City DC-10 crash-landing.

That they got shot down is criminal.

Yup! and the Russians have already tried to blame it on bird-strike.

And I have no doubt that privately Putin will have examples made of the local SAM crew that fired the SA-22 responsible for the shoot down of the E190, perhaps having them put through basic infantry training before being sent to the Ukrainian front to be expended as cannon-meat.

That assumes too much competence by people realizing immediately that there was something to be covered up, rather than "shit, get them out the engagement zone."

I was initially surprized they didn't try to divert north or south, but with a drone attack underway the shortest route out of Russian airspace would be much more reasonable.

Also, weather was apparently marginal at many of the obvious Russian alternates, especially with GPS being denied and a damaged aircraft (who knows what other, possibly RNAV related, systems failures they were dealing with).

Lame. He's not even owning up to any Russian responsibility whatsoever. Not unexpected of course, but still lame.

Exactly. GTFO of the area ASAP, then figure out where to land.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said Sunday that the Azerbaijani airliner that crashed last week was shot down by Russia, albeit unintentionally, and criticized Moscow for trying to “hush up” the issue for days.

“We can say with complete clarity that the plane was shot down by Russia. (...) We are not saying that it was done intentionally, but it was done,” he told Azerbaijani state television.

Aliyev said that the airliner, which crashed Wednesday in Kazakhstan, was hit by fire from the ground over Russia and “rendered uncontrollable by electronic warfare.” Aliyev accused Russia of trying to “hush up” the issue for several days, saying he was “upset and surprised” by versions of events put forward by Russian officials
