The guy to search is Robert (R. G.) Loewy who was at CAL in 1949-1952 and again in 1954-1957. It was Loewy who first applied unsteady airfoil theory to rotor blades. Apparently, this was prompted, in part, by problems with the Hughes XH-17 Sky Crane.
