I wonder if they'll bump their build rate higher than even the hoped for rate for the Fords (reducing from 5 to 3-1/2 year in some reports). They certainly beat Newport News in the crane department.

They have at least two yards that can build carriers. The USN has only one. They can beat us in number of hulls per year if they want.

The US has two active carrier yards, one for CVNs and one for LHDs/LHAs which could also build something like a QE if required. There's also 4 active yards which could build vessels in that size class but at the moment do not, and so on. If we're just comparing theoretical capabilities, things can quickly become silly.

So far, they've refurbished one medium carrier and are building one of similar design notably modified to suit their industrial capabilities. That's impressive enough, and will continue to be impressive as they develop their industry. But we're still a ways from them matching or exceeding the CVN+LHA/D build rate of the US industry.

So it seems as if on Sunday indeed it was not a "true" launch: Even if the dry-dock was flooded and there were some PLAN personnel and musicians attending, which have already left the shipyard, the ceremony has ended.

For the moment it seems merely as if they are just checking the vessel over first to see if there are any problems and the ceremony seems more like a token ceremony just to commemorate 23rd April, the PLAN's 68th anniversary and everything else was perhaps merely a rehearsal, so that the real ceremony with waving flags, fanfare, fireworks and the ship truly leaving the dock will be held another day.

But ... Preparations for the celebration ... Looks like tomorrow will be the day?

China officially launched its second -- and the first domestically developed -- aircraft carrier on Wednesday morning in Dalian, Liaoning province.

The ship is the largest and most sophisticated surface vessel China has ever built.

General Fan Changlong, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, took part in the launch ceremony at a shipyard in the northeastern coastal city. Fan's presence indicates the significance Chinese leaders attach to the colossal ship because only the most important equipment for the PLA would have top-level officers at the public debut ceremony.

The new carrier's name and hull code remain unknown as the Navy usually makes public such information when a ship is commissioned.

As this one is domestically designed and built plus being launched on the Anniversary I wonder if this ship will have a much greater media profile as they tended to play down the status and role of the former Varyag until it was declared fully operational.

Going to be interesting to keep an eye on what happens now, will that ship return to dry dock to continue fitting out or will it go alongside for that process as quite a bit of hardware to install. If it does remain alongside we'll have to see if they quickly start the 2nd new hull to get that one assembled quickly too and allow them to lay down their new conventional carrier design

Interesting so the third carrier will be the new design and built elsewhere, I thought they wanted 2 new build Kuznetsov's to go with the Liaoning which would revert to training role and then start their new indigenous conventional carrier but that sounds like the work is being done in parallel with a 2nd shipyard or is Shanghai just the design and development team ?

From a modelling point of view its a case of Oh Bugger , Trumpeter did a nice model of the Kuznetsov and adapted the tooling to produce the Liaoning but with the new Carrier being 10m's longer and 3m's wider as well as revised Island and sponsons it would mean a new kit rather than tweaking the current kit, plus with a new design also in production they are far more likely to produce the new design which is likely to form the core of their new Carrier fleet.

The width of the Liaoning is the same, 75 metres, and her length is 304.5. That's virtually identical, but propaganda needs hype, not truth.

Still, should be interesting to see how they've modified the Soviet design.

Indeed, images show and prove since months that both are roughly of exact the same dimensions ? (the green line on the left shows the same length of the dock's width.) Must be either a stupid reporter or some over-enthusiastic fan-boy who thinks bigger is better or with very small hands. ;D

Ah good news, then we may see a conversion kit or possibly even a revised tooling of the kit if the basis shapes are the same ;D. They may well increased the beam but I suspect it will be on the flight deck sponson structure rather than building it into the hull.

I wonder if he gave away some of the details of 003 rather than 002, which would be more inline with a conventional super carrier size ?

The exterior is less interesting than the internal changes, with the exception of the revised island. Shall be interesting to see howshe does.

Because its proven technology they know that works, they can hardly go buy a C-13 Steam Catapult off the US or a new EMALS catapult. They are however currently testing their own Catapult at a ground facility along with catapult enabled J-15s so their next carrier design will include catapults - not entirely sure if this will be like the Soviet approach with waist catapults for AEW aircraft and retaining the bow ski jump or a full conventional carrier layout with a flat flight deck and bow and waist catapults.

I seem to recall mention that the Carrier fleet programme would be two new build refined Kuznetsov's in addition to the ex-Varyag and then 3 new own build CATOBAR conventional carriers, but it sounds like the new design is well underway in shanghai and may well be the third carrier. Need to see what Dieno says

Ski jumps are there to aid conventional take off's during bad weather, that is why the Ark Royal and the other ships in the Illustrious family had them. Or put it another way, Britain would have lost the Falklands had it not been for ski jumps.

Perhaps to make the Queen Elizabeth class look not so bad. The fact that we are going to struggle to place those 40 aircraft is shameful.

As a sideline, its interesting to imagine what might have developed with Chinese carrier capabilities if the Chinese interest in the Hawker Siddeley Harrier had come to fruition back in the 1970s.
