Finally a model of China's new LHD project, the Type 075.

Said to displace 36,000 tonnes and operate 28 helicopters, under construction at Shanghai' Hudong-Zhonghua shipyards since late 2016.

How many LHDs are the PLAN planning to build after the second one is completed? Seems strange that the PLAN don't call them amphibious assault carriers like the US do.

The US does not call them that either, not officially. Usually they get called amphibious assault ships.

I'm curious what the PLAN official designation is, though.

Thanks TomS. I was wondering about the official Chinese designation myself, perhaps Deino knows.

What is China planning to do with these ships?
there have been no announcements from PLA navy, so one can only guess. obviously such ship enables helicopter assaults on far away islands and land masses. (other tactical requirements permitting) that is an ability pla does not have today in significant quantity, save for very close by islands. such as Taiwan. these sort of ships might enable missions hundreds of kilometers away from mainland. like in South China Sea, at the edge of first island chain in East China Sea and even (in theory) for islands in the second island chain. various across-the-ocean missions like support/protection of overseas bases like the one China has in Djibouti are all possible.
finally, augmentation of anti sub and maritime patrol assets far from shore is also possible. as china still does not posess a large number of flat tops. while that role would be of lesser importance (otherwise the ship would not have a dock well) it might still be an option to exploit.

Already being painted!??

Probably the best set of images of the first Type 075 LHD so far from today ... unfortunately the second ship as well as certain details like the hangar as still psed, but anyway an impressive ship. And it seems as if launch in now set for 24. September.

In-deck rather than deck-edge elevators and long, skinny island bring to mind the SCS/Príncipe de Asturias.

Not long to wait then. Can’t wait to see the first images from the launch ceremony.

... and here you go! The first PLAN Type 075 LHD was launched this morning at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard.

Latest images of the second one ... I wasn't able to find an exact comparable image of the first one but it seems to fit bet to an image dated 20. August 2019 ... and as such a bit more than a month before launch. So mid- to late-April is indeed highly likely.

Or they sent a crew to clean/paint over the soot quickly since they know people are taking pictures, and just won't tell anyone about what the damage inside looks like.
