California

sorry for the OT post but given I've seen these California comments more than once on this site - do a lot of people think most everyone in California is a hippie? I know there are a lot of liberal places like SF but I always think of California as having a few liberal hot spots (with good chunks of the state pop) but when I think about the more rural areas, or sub/exurbs of LA, or the Central Valley, for example, I think of some very conservative regions (perhaps libertarian is a better word?). LM is based in CA. My dad's company (Hughes Helicopters) was in LA then Carlsbad. Lots of space and missile systems cos in San Diego. To say nothing of the huge military presence in the San Diego area, I dunno. I grew up in SoCal and dont understand extended comment chains like this because it doesn't reflect growing up in LA/SD, but maybe because I come from a military/aviation family. Perhaps it was too hard for me to hear the Grateful Dead living within 15m of NAS Miramar.

Like most any state in the U.S., there is a rather stark rural/urban divide politically, Though the Bay Area might be considered more liberally extreme than most any other urban area.

Cali has one of the most extreme urban/rural swings in terms of liberal and conservative.

But it's also because Cali was one of the first states to legalize pot, was the first to recognize medical MJ, etc. California lawmakers are a bunch of hippies.

A large reason for this and other changes was the state cost of enforcement and incarceration.

For what it’s worth, from my experience even in large cities like LA, if certain political hotspots are avoided, I never really noticed any overt political leanings one way or another. When I was stationed at MCB Camp Pendleton and lived in San Clemente, didn’t really notice it either. This was the case even when I grew up in the Bay Area. Or maybe I simply got lucky, I don’t know.

And as progressive as California pretends to be--it spends more money on prisons than schools.

Hello, as an European I do not want to share my political opinion in this forum, especially during the US election season, but I highly recommend the Youtube videos from Peter Santenello. His videos gives you a perspective about the USA, that the mainstream media fails to capture. :)

As a German Resident Alien Expat/Guest Worker Southern California Orange County tax paying (so much for that hollow slogan "No Taxation Without Representation!" - joke's on me - I'm not allowed to vote, yet I pay taxes, but I'm not bitter, no siree Bob, because whoever expected consistency from the United States!) Resident, I implore, nay, beseech you, ***DO NOT EVER*** relocate here!!! There are quite literally political liberals *EVERYWHERE*, you may need to apply suntan lotion when visiting the beach, we are prone to occasional earthquakes, mudslides, wildlife attacks, and wildfires, and there are times when you may have to slow down waaayyy below 65 MPH on freeways during rush hour in metropolitan areas!!! It truly is a little moderate Mediterranean Climate Pacific Rim hugging hell hole, and it is almost only my rather well paying cushy pseudo aerospace job that keeps me tethered to this apocalyptic progressive slice of paradise for now, rather than relocating to oh say heaven on earth nirvanas like Louisiana, Idaho, or North Dakota. But seriously folks, politics here are staunchly leftist, women actually have rights, and people are into ecological preservation - can you imagine!!! Perhaps, just maybe, the World would be better off by having California secede from the union and let it sink or swim on her own as the standalone fifth largest economy in the world, rather than have it financially subsidize those under-performing mouth-breather alligator infested country hee haw aw shucks hell-hole benighted retarded states, but I digress...

Born and raised in LA but live in OC, have two more years before I retire but I will still do some engineering consulting (or maybe insulting) work then its bye, bye CA. My Wife and I actually went out to dinner the other night and had AI-generated seafood just for the halibut, gotta love CA. We did have to mussel our way into the restaurant, did not like our table and were told to clam-up but we did have salmon enchanted evening. See what happens when you live here too long, I had three punectomies but it still kept growing back.

How big is California's economy after you remove all the military contractors from the state? National security items must be made inside the US, after all.

Oh, and all the military bases, too.

Because that's how big their economy would be if California seceded.

I am truly sorry to learn about your punectomies, but coastal SoCal is the place to be, so more power to you!!!

Perhaps you're not old enough to remember the (incorrect) Albert Hammond song "It Never Rains In Southern California", because global tourism is a major factor of California's economy. I tend to believe though that the Pentagon would still contract with an independent California simply for the quality of work. You surely are aware of the fact that the USMC bought *British* Harrier Jump Jets from the UK because of their unique capabilities that apparently could not be easily replicated by the United States? SoCal has still aces up her sleeves, so there you go...

Quite big in fact. Military contractors make up a tiny slice of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley (mostly LM in Sunnyvale). But we obviously have a ton of tech companies and also a major biotech hub. Aerospace is big in the LA area, but even then its only a small portion of all they do. California controls almost all the Pacific trade and also has a huge agriculture side.

Most of what you see on the news about California is way overblown. Sure there are certain neighborhoods you don't go to, but I've been in Oakland and SF plenty of times and never felt unsafe. Smoke from fires is annoying but unless you live in the mountains its not an issue. And cost of living? Sure its high, but wages are also very high... And once you get past housing, most everything else (ie cars) is reasonably comparable to the rest of the country and sometimes cheaper (ie fruits and vegetables).
