Concerning this document, the following extract may be of interest to understand the designations:

To provide credibility for the evaluation of advanced technology, numerous configurations
were considered and developed during the course of this study. Each configuration was
assigned a model number designator. Since the prefix number 767 is a series number for all,
it is omitted in the remainder of the report, and dash numbers (such as -601 or -701) are used
to identify each airplane. The 767-600 designators indicate NASA configurations, and the
767-700 series the contractor alternate designators.

Same can be said about the 777, and especially the 787, much less of a dream liner than the original design!
