See MADCAP, MOSS, MAY, MAXDOME, MIDAS, MAINSTAY... all adaptations of airliners or transports to greater or lesser degree.

I don't know about MULLET specifically though.

True, true, but all have major airframe mods - rotodomes (Mainstay, Moss, Madcap), Large kit added (Maxdome), wings moved forward - May . Midas...hmmm...maybe...but there is a separate Candid tanker. 'Mullet' I would place in the same category as Coot-B or the various Bear versions but the Tu-204/214 hasn't been assigned an ASCC name as far as I'm aware.

Speaking of names, I've always pronounced Russian aircraft designations as 'T-U' or 'S-U' but never really bothered about this much before. Recently, especially on YouTube, I find them being referred to as ''Too' and 'Soo'. What's the correct usage? Or is this a computer reading artifact?

Chris

True, but there's no base ASCC for the Tu-204.

MiG and Yak were always not M-I-G and Y-A-K. But I also would say S-u and T-u.

not these long 'oo''s. "Tu" and "Su" just like they are being pronounced inside full Tupolev or Sukhoi names

FLANKER G1 = Su-30MKK
FLANKER G2 = Su-30MK2
FLANKER G3 = Su-27UBK
FLANKER J mod = Su-27SM3

As a native speaker, I have many questions...

CH-AA-7 = PL-12
CH-AA-9 = PL-10

CAA-3 = PL-4

it makes no logical sense for 27UBK to be a G. It's probably a C. It also precedes MKK and MK2 chronologically so I think the author made a mistake.

That's a strange listing considering that the 'Hoop' was assigned to the Ka-22 Vintokryl which flew 1959-64 and the Yak-30 and 32 were nearly 25 years old by 1983 as well. Was this just a case of the ASCC catching up?

No, most likely just Flight International becoming aware of them.

The NATO designation for the 3M22 Zircon is the SS-N-33

That's the DoD designation. It seems pedantic but it's an important distinction, DoD designations are assigned upon substantive evidence of a new system. NATO reporting names are only issued when it is confirmed in service.

The constant use of terms such as "SA-5 GAMMON" is tautologous.

In terms of missiles the NATO scheme has the advantage that it reads directly across to the naval systems; a GRUMBLE is the same thing on land or at sea instead of having to remember that an SA-N-6 is the same as SA-10.

That makes sense, I've been getting the two confused. So we know what the DoD designation is (SS-N-33) but does anyone know what the NATO reporting name is for the missile?

Edit: Does NATO's website have a link to a list of NATO reporting names?

Have the Tu-160 variants been given ASCC suffixes? eg the Tu-160M and Tu-160M2 or are they all Blackjack-A?

Chris
Blackjack-A was the standard Tu-160, can't remember what Blackjack-B was, but Blackjack-C was a dedicated ALCM carrier. I think Blackjack-D was the planned land-based Naval Aviation variant.

So would I be correct that the US DoD designation for the S-500 is the SA-X-30 (Since it's still in the prototype stage)? Also does anyone know what its' NATO reporting name is?
