Quite riggerrob why didn't I think of that. as the picture only showed part of the mechanism it is confusing so as you have noticed so well it is a bolt of an early breech-loading, bolt-action rifle. Thanks for clearing up the confusionLooks like the bolt of an early breech-loading, bolt-action rifle. It seems to only lock on the coking handle. That limited locking surface and the round-nosed bullet implies the low pressures associated with black powder. I am guessing an early Mousin-Nagant or Mauser or Lee rifle.
