840-850 Standard Aircraft Characteristics/Characteristics Sheets

When I get approval to get into the USAF Museum archives, anything on the GAR-X, GAR-9/AIM-47, and AGM-76 is on my list. I can see if they have anything on the AIM-9 and AIM-7 as well.

Hi RyanCrierie!

If possible, continue Standard Aircraft Characteristics/Characteristics Sheets,

please

I'm particularly intrigued about the approval of XF2R-2, as I wasn't aware of a second Darkshark version.

Is there a place on the web from which we can download them? Thanks!

I'm particularly intrigued about the approval of XF2R-2, as I wasn't aware of a second Darkshark version.

From Naval fighters 28 - 'FR-1 Fireball and XF2R-1 Darkshark', page 61 :-

"Although the XF2R-1 was an impressive aircraft, the added power (of the turboprop) only increased the top speed by about 75mph, due to the weight increase of 1100lbs that came with it. In fact the XFR-4.....proved to be 25mph faster than the XF2R-1 because there was no significant weight increase over the FR-1.
However, the Air Force was initially impressed enough during trials at Muroc to request the construction of the XF2R-2,
which would have combined the TG-100 turboprop with the J34 (as fitted to the XFR-4), offering much greater performance than the XP-81 turboprop they were testing."

cheers,
Robin.

How could the Air Force request the construction of a naval variant??? This is beyond me.

Stargazer 2006..... sorry, that's all the book says...... :'(

A clarification, it's not clear from my previous post, the FR-1 and XF2R-1 had the GE I-16 (J31) jet engine, of 1600 lbst thrust, whereas in the XFR-4 it was replaced by a Westinghouse J34 of 2000 lbst.
Also, from page 57 of the above mentioned book, "...The XF2R-2 was to have the GE TG-100 turboprop as tested on the XF2R-1 Darkshark, and the J34 with fuselage intakes as tested on the XFR-4."

cheers,
Robin.

Easy. The Navy doesn't care if the USAF funds the construction of the naval variant, if they get a chance to evalulate it as well. Who knows? Perhaps it might turn out to be something useful, and in that case, a lot of the development funding will have been done by the USAF. ;D

Or it may just have been a slip of the pen that got past the proofing stage. May have meant to write 'Navy', but put 'Air Force' instead.........

cheers,
Robin.

Trying something new here:

Creating folders with their own link spam for specific aircraft; the F-108 one is here

Link

Since I've moved away from just SACs to all sorts of things, like photos, brochures, correspondence, etc.

Latest addition, RIM-8 Talos page. Not much to report here other than a few photos and one news release.

Photographs and single page documents are now in PNG format, long documents are in PDF. This will probably make things easier for you guys, since I know PDF doesn't like to play well. (Adobe's reader is horrid).

I also am toying around with the idea of thumbnails of stuff, to make it easier before you click on something what it is, especially considering the file sizes 4-5 MB are still pretty hefty, for someone who is still on dial up or is only a step above (not all of us can afford superfast internet broadband, just regular broadband).

I tracked down the original 1 MB to 1.4 MB JPEGs from Defense Imagery.mil for the AMRAAM page; threw in some scans I did at Archives II of the Raytheon/Hughes designs, and presto.

The Archival Resources page has been heavily updated.
