First photo: Chamical, Argentina, 1988. Preparatory to the launch of the Condor I missile. The project Condor I/II was canceled by the government of Carlos Menem.

Second Photo: A full-scale model of the Còndor II. When the Menem government disarmed the project, the CIA people took everything to the base in Rota, in Spain, and from there to total destruction in Langley, Virginia.

Third Photo: A very interesting book about Condor II Project written by Pablo de León, an Argentine Aerospace Engineer who works in the US designing, developing and testing space suits for NASA.

The book is based on a doctoral thesis written by Pablo de Leon, for his Doctorate in History from the University of San Andres in Argentina, entitled:

Can you expand on your comment about the CIA taking this missile to Spain and then Virginia? It seems absurd. Second, I did not know anything about Pablo de León and his involvement in designing spacesuits in the US. Where would he get the knowledge to qualify for such work?

El lanzamiento en las Salinas Grandes, fue filmado desde un avión Spitfire PR.Mk.XI fotográfico con matricula civil LV-MNZ al mando del suboficial Villegas que volaba detrás del IA-24 Calquin, piloteado por el Capitán Edmundo Weiss, que portaba en su zona ventral el AM-1. El combustible del Tábano era ácido nítrico y anilina. Al juntarse en el compresor del cohete estos dos elementos, se producía el encendido y se disparaba.

70 years ago, in May 1950, the AM-1 "Tábano" motorized tele-directed rocket that acted like an air-to-air bomb was first launched. The launch in the Salinas Grandes, Córdoba, was filmed from a Spitfire PRMk.XI with civil registration LV-MNZ commanded by Petty Officer Villegas who was flying behind IA-24 Calquin, piloted by Captain Edmundo Weiss, who carries AM-1 in his ventral area. The Tabano's fuel was nitric acid and aniline. When these two elements are brought together in the rocket compressor, the ignition occurs and it was launched.

that "only remained a curiosity".
Looks like a manned aerodynamic testbed to me. Perhaps knowing the
source of that article would help ? (seems not to be Le Fana)

Dilandu is right , I think, IIRC the Soviet KS-1/AS-1 Kennel was tested
as a manned aircraft, too. It's just, that this one here don't give the impression,
that piloting it from inside that cockpit would have been a very good idea ...

Most likely it is not complete (maybe never were actually finished), but I agree; cockpit seems to be extremely out-of-shape.

as a manned aircraft, too.

Wasn't the AS-1 Kennel derived from the MiG-15?

The Skua!, i got a bit frustrated after long searches regarding information about it, mainly because of the name, a lot of sources confuse it with the Sea Skua (supposedly a missile that was homologated in the Argentine Lynx helicopters although it didn't really made it overseas).

Born out of a requirement for 2 missiles for the COAN (Naval Aviation COmmand), one was an ASM/AshM, while the other was an AAM, both started development at the same time and were under the same company CIETFA, as fas as i remember getting info about it, the Skua used a modified AIM-9 seeker and it had a few modifications to make it...i guess a bit better?, a couple of reasons ended up in its cancellation while it was undergoing flight and other tests.

Its brother, the Martin Pescador, was the one that lived on. The MP was comparable to the US Bullpup missile, as it was required to be manually guided by the pilot. This missile was pretty simple for the time and ended up being more as a training tool for both COAN and CITEFA on how to use, field and work on ASM, it was never used in combat, but it saw being fitted to various platforms like the T-28, Mb.326, Ia.58 Pucara and UH-1D Huey (wire guided version).


Ill throw a bonus here for you, cause there is another installment on the MP family, the Bigua...again...it used the same name that was given to an Air Launched drone that was tested in the Pucara, so searching for it is a pain in the rear, the Bigua is essentially an elongated Martin Pescador, this time it wasn't done by CITEFA, but by another company, TENSA. The missile itself was meant for Ground-Ground use, it had a longer range and it kept the simplicity of the original.

Why this missiles never made it onto the A-4s or Mirage Vs...i really dont know, maybe they weren't as advanced ? or they didn't justify the spending? (The mirages had an awful experience with the AS.20/30). Personally i see that missile more in the realms of being an ATGM or a Short range Anti Air missile.

There is also the mention of an H.500 being fitted with it, but i found nothing on that.
