Zero-length launch

Rocketdyne M-34 ZLL Motor
Thrust: 130,000 lbf for 4 seconds.
Notes: Used for Zero-Length Launching of USAF F-100D Super Sabres. Development began under USAF R&D contract in 1957. Can accelerate a F-100D from zero to 275 MPH in under four seconds.

If interested, check youtube, - I recall seeing some spectacular footage of F-84s being launched thusly..
 
Speaking of F-84s, here is one that was on display in St. Louis in 1957, courtesy of the Robert A. Burgess collection.

Anyone know what the loop in front of the intake is for?
 
According to the link in #4, it's to prevent the intake lip digging into the rubber mat on landing...

Until I read that article and the caption on the last picture in it, I was unaware that along with an unconventional take off mode they were trying an unconventional landing mode.
