So having purchased finally Battle Flight by Chris Gibson, wonderful work there by the way and a joy to read. I'm drawn to yet more missile musings......
The Stage III system offerings seem to offer some fascenating 'what if' material and give some further presepctive to NIGS and even dare we suggest SIGS, but chief amongst them is the lower end of the spectrum, aiming for essentially a successor to Thunderbird II.
Such system, seems to offer several things...
Simpler missile, likely two stages and no use of wrap around boosters.
Potential for ARH and command guidance.
Lighter total system weight for ease of transport in comparison to Thunderbird, Bloodhound and Hawk.
Aiming for the interception of what is with hindsight the upper limits of most combat aircraft through the Cold War bar the Mig25.
An interesting path to ponder, because of it's possible naval application as well.
