RAF HELENSBURGH MAEE was involved with pioneering Yagi radar in 1941 advised by Dr E. Bowen. It sent a Catalina DP202 fitted with Yagi ASV aerials to America for further trials. DP202 at Consolidated was Guarded at all times. My reports mention Mr Johnson, Mr Bridges of Saunders Roe me thinks and Group Captain Ring. I wonder if he flew DP202 to America as he was ferry pilot. It is not clear how he fits in with the reports and he was not a MAEE test pilot.

Spent afternoon researching Spencer Leonard Ring RCAF, who was assigned to MAEE Helensburgh, via MAP on assignment. So it seems he flew DP202 to Consolidated but there is no record of the pilot that I can find. Ring had an eventful war i.e. flying an unarmed Spitfire to photograph the Dunkirk evasion and later flying a captured 109 at Manston. Sadly he died at a young age after the war. Any confirmation of Ring flying DP202 to America would be much appreciated for my article for the Helensburgh Advertiser.
